  1. Birds By: Kaitlynn Hill, MakalyaSimmons, Amanda Garcia, A.J. Smith, Chris Bridgeman

  2. Key Terms • Bird- Endothermic vertebrate that has feathers, and a four-chambered heart, that lays eggs. • Contour feathers- Large feathers that give the bird its shape • Down feathers- trap heat, and keep bird warm • Crop- Stores food before entering stomach • Gizzard- A thick-walled muscular part of stomach • Lift- An upward force that causes the bird to rise

  3. Common Characteristics • Feathers • Four-Chambered heart • Lays eggs • Contour feathers • No teeth • Most have wings • Lightweight bones • They are Endotherms • Most can fly

  4. Internal Conditions • They use their food for energy • Since it uses its food for energy it needs a lot of food • The down feathers help trap heat

  5. Reproduction • They reproduce sexually. • They lay eggs in a nest that are built by the birds. • The eggs hatch and mini birds come out with barely any feathers. • They start to grow and get more feathers and they become adults. • Then they restart..

  6. Circulatory system/oxygen • The birds have lungs and air sacs, the air sacs hold air and allows them to keep more air than any other animal. • The air sacs are connected to the lungs and they release air when needed. • The heart is a four chambered heart. • The four chambers are the lungs, the blood thing, one blood to air and another one.

  7. Movement • Birds mostly fly. • Smaller birds do little hops to get around on land. • Though bigger birds walk like humans. • When they need to get off the ground to fly they thrust themselves up..

  8. How they fly • Birds use contour feathers to steer. • They flap their wings to stay up. • They glide to go down and soar to go up. • When air pressure hits the top of a birds wings that will cause it to lift.

  9. Other Interesting Facts • Birds need energy to maintain their body temperature. Need food to fly. Ostrich eggs take 2:00 hours to hard boil. A birds temperature is 7-80 hotter than ours. A birds heart beats 400 times a minute while they are resting. Pigeons reach a speed up to 100 mph. The Australian pelican is up to 18.5 (47 cm) long. Nine egg yolks have been found in one egg. The heaviest flying bird is the great bustard weighing as much as a six year old human child.
