  1. A Review of Human Resources Curricula in Schools and Colleges of Pharmacy: Phase IJohn Pedey-Braswell and Dana P. HammerUniversity of Washington School of Pharmacy PHASE 1 RESULTS METHODS OBJECTIVES • Exploratory, descriptive study conducted in two phases: • Phase I (Jan-Aug 2002): • All US,PR pharmacy schools’ entry-level Pharm.D.curricular websites reviewed for required course titles including: • pharmacy administration • practice management • pharmacy management • pharmacy systems • human resources • personnel • management • Assumption: these courses included human resources management content even if not reflected in title. • Numbers and credits for these courses were tabulated to determine the prevalence of management course titles and their relative percentage of respective curricula. • Results compared in different groupings of schools. • Phase II (Sept-June 2003): • Conduct survey of pharmacy management faculty to determine specific amounts and type of human resource management instruction. Conduct a two-phase student-directed study to determine the specific amounts and nature of human resource management curricula in pharmacy schools. BACKGROUND • Changes in pharmacy practice and the roles of ancillary personnel have prompted recommendations of human resources management-related education in schools of pharmacy from: • The Pew Health Professions Commission • AACP • ACPE • Purpose of this project is to determine the extent to which these recommendations are being followed. IMPLICATIONS The first phase of this study attempted to identify and quantify where HR curricula might be found. Results show most schools as having management-related courses but the extent to which HR content is included within these is unknown. The second phase will demonstrate more specific information about the amount and types of human resource management curricula required in pharmacy schools.
