  2. Earthquakes • An Earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground as a result of the movement of tectonic plates. • The top ten earthquakes happened in:

  3. 10: San Francisco, CA • It happened on October 17th, 1989. • It killed 67 people and caused 2 billion dollars of damage. • Its magnitude was 7.1

  4. 9: Messina, Sicily • Occurred on December 28th, 1908 and caused 85,000 deaths. • The magnitude of this earthquake was 7.5.

  5. 8: Gansu, China • This earthquake occurred on December 25, 1932 • The magnitude was 7.6 • 70,000 people died

  6. 7: Northwestern Iran • It occurred on June 21 1990 • It killed 70,000 • Its Magnitude was 7.7

  7. 6: Chimbote, Peru • The Magnitude was7.75 • Occurred on May 31st, 1970 • Caused 50,000 deaths, left 800,000 homeless, and 17,000 people were missing

  8. 5: Izmit, Turkey • This earthquake occurred on August 17th, 1999 • It killed 40,000 people and caused 10 billion dollars in damage • The magnitude was 7.8

  14. 10: Mount Lamington • This volcano is located in Papua New Guinea and is 1,680 meters high • It erupted on January 18th, 1951 on the unexpecting residents and lava continued to flow for a few more months • It killed 3,000 people overall

  15. 9: Papandayan • This volcano erupted in 1772 on the island of Java in Indonesia • It destroyed forty villages and killed 3,000 villagers

  16. 8: Kelut • Kelut is also located in Java, like Papandayan • It erupted on May 19, 1919 and killed over 5,000 people • It also started lakes of magma

  17. 7: Unzen • This volcano, standing 1,500 meters high, is actually made up of several overlapping stratovolcanoes in Kyushu, Japan • Its largest eruption was in 1792 killing 15,000 people when a tsunami was triggered from the collapsing of several lava domes

  18. 6: Ruiz • It is located in Colombia • In 1985 23,000 people died when the volcano erupted and completely covered the town • It is estimated that it caused 1,000,000,000 dollars in damage

  19. 5: Mount Pelee • In 1902, an eruption occurred that was the biggest in the 20th century. It killed over 30,000 people

  20. 4: Krakatoa • In August 1883 there were a series of extremely violent and gigantic explosions with a force of 13,000 times larger than the Hiroshima bombing • 0ver 37,000 people were killed mainly due to tsunamis, although the actual death toll is thought to be much larger.
