  1. “The Effect of This Good Lesson Keep” The Second Family—Meet Laertes, Ophelia, and Polonius

  2. Improvisation You have 15minutes to create and present a contemporary version of 1.3

  3. Family Relationships In your log (refer to lines to support your ideas): • Describe the family relationships: • Laertes and Ophelia • Polonius and Laertes • Polonius and Ophelia • What does each of these people want? • How do they treat each other? • How is this family similar to or different from the Claudius/Gertrude/Hamlet family? • The Old Hamlet/Gertrude/Hamlet family?

  4. Polonius’s Language Clues “Give thy thoughts no tongue” (1.3.65)– Analyze this speech by focusing on Polonius’s language (cite line numbers): • Look at “but” constructions— “Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar,” (1.3.67) for example. What is their effect? • What can we infer about Polonius from his choice of words? • What do Polonius’ words reveal about his beliefs, philosophy, and values?

  5. Homework Read and log 1.4 and 1.5
