  1. Better health for people with learning disabilities in Northamptonshire The Learning Disability Partnership Board Meeting 2nd September 2010 Pat McCarthy, Emma Baross and Gwen Ncube

  2. The Learning Disability Partnership Board have 10 things about health in their plan for 2010 and 2011. Today, we are going to tell you about the work that has been done on the plan so far

  3. How have we done? We are going to tell you; What has gone well and will be finished by March 2011 What has been started but won’t be finished by March 2011 What work hasn’t been started

  4. 3.1 The Better Healthcare Plan The Better Healthcare plan has been written. The One Health Group have been meeting to make sure that the Better Healthcare plan happens and people are doing the work that is needed

  5. 3.2 The Big Health Check We asked adults and children with learning disabilities, their families and carers about their experiences over the last year of health services and the treatment they received Everyone voted so that we could measure whether things had got better and to show us what still needs to change.

  6. How we are doing 3.1 The Better Healthcare Plan This action has been finished. Now we have to make sure that the work on the plan happens 3.2 The Big Health Check This action has been finished. A report is being written about what we found out. This will be sent to the big bosses

  7. 3.3 Annual Health Checks 79 out of 81 GP surgeries in Northamptonshire are offering Health Checks to adults 842 Health checks have happened so far. We think lots more have happened, about 1400, but we are waiting for the GP’s to tell us. Next we need to look at how good these checks are

  8. 3.4 Health Checks in Prison Visits have been made to the prisons to talk about how they support people with a learning disability We don’t know how many people in prison with a learning disability have had a health check. We need a way of finding out which people have a learning disability in the local prisons

How we are doing 3.3 Annual Health Checks Not all GP surgeries have agreed to do the health checks Not everyone will have had a health check by March 2011 3.4 Health Checks in Prison Although work has started we need to do a lot more work around improving the health of learning disabled prisoners

  10. 3.5 Understanding Healthcare Funding Information sessions are being arranged for people and their families so that they understand their right to Continuing Health Care Funding These sessions will be running in the winter We need to look at what other information is available to people about healthcare funding

  11. How we are doing 3.5 Understanding rights to Continuing Healthcare Funding We will need to ask the people who attend the sessions what other information they might need We need to find people to run the information sessions in the future

  12. 3.6 Health Action Plans -Adults We are asking GP’s to fill out a Health Action Plan when a person has their Annual Health Check We will ask GP’s to tell us how many Health Action Plans they have completed

  13. 3.7 Health Action Plan-Children We have worked with Wren Spinney School to include Health Action Planning as part of the children’s transition review meeting Northampton General are doing Individual Health Plans for children coming into their hospital

  14. How we are doing 3.6 Health Action Plans for Adults We know that some adults have a health action plan but we don’t have a way of counting this yet 3.7 Health Action Plans for Children We need to do more work with children's services about health action plans

  15. 3.8 Information and training for hospital and health care staff 195 staff at both hospitals have had training in Learning Disability and the Mental Capacity Act Staff at doctors surgeries and student doctors have had training about Learning Disability At Northampton Hospital, all staff have to attend a Learning Disability Awareness session.

  16. 2 people with Learning Disabilities have been employed at Kettering Hospital to train staff Both hospitals have Easy Read information about complaints and information about Learning Disability for staff

  17. 3.9 Transition in Health Care Clinics are held at Northampton Hospital to plan for children who are soon to be adults There is a new pathway for adults going into hospital in an emergency. This will make it easier when young people need to start using adult services at the hospital.

How we are doing 3.8 Staff training Lots of people have been trained and we will train more people, but we will not manage to train 80% of all hospital staff 3.9 Becoming adults in health care The work done so far is helping health services prepare better for the transition of young people, but the work needs to continue

  19. 3.10 Mental Health services will improve In Northamptonshire, the self assessment for mental health services now shows that there has been an improvement We know this because there are now 8 standards that are GREEN. There was only 1 Green before

  20. 3.11 Better support for Mental Health Work has begun to ask people with learning disabilities about the support they get for their mental health We know that there are 17 adults who have a learning disability who are using mental health services

  21. 3.12 Joint Plan There is a plan on how to improve mental health services for people with learning disabilities This has been written by Mental Health Services, Learning Disability Services and Commissioners This plan will be monitored by a group of bosses

  22. How we are doing 3.10 Improving mental health services The audit shows things have improved since last year. More improvements may happen by March 2011 3.11 Getting better support for Mental Health People will be asked about their experience 3.12 Joint Plan This plan is in place and being monitored

  23. Summary Out of 10 Targets 5 will be completed by March 2011 5 have been started and are going well but won’t be finished by March 2011

  24. How you can help us We are going to get into groups to look at some things in the plan that we need some more help with We are going to talk about Health Promotion Health Action Plans Service User involvement
