  1. Deer Management By Bryan Studaker WRT 160 27 March 2014

  2. Research Question Is hunting the most effective way to deal with the increasing populations of white-tail deer in order to limit the problems they cause?

  3. Introduction Problems caused by deer • Auto-deer collisions. • Damage to certain vegetation. • Spreading of diseases. “Road sign deer crossing” image courtesy of Dreamstime

  4. Introduction, Pt. II Deer Facts • Population was once very small. • Population can increase rapidly. • Deer management can be difficult. “White Tail deer family” image courtesy of Dreamstime

  5. Methods • I used a different form of primary research where I looked at websites more extensively. • I focused on two websites. • One was on different deer management techniques. • The other was on deer management in Metroparks in Oakland County.

  6. Results Deer Management Techniques • Non-lethal techniques • Repellants • Lethal techniques • Hunting • Sharpshooting “Deer Hunters” image courtesy of Dreamstime

  7. Results, Pt. II Metroparks • Sharpshooters were used to manage the deer. • 70-85 more deer per square mile than there should be (Elliot, 2004). • 50-30 deer were taken each year(Elliot, 2004). • Meat was donated to food banks.

  8. Analysis • Lethal techniques seemed the most effective. • Sharpshooters have the equivalent effect as hunters. • Controlling deer will help limit the three problems.
