Enjoy a couple more tidbits about the Keys... The Florida Keys consist of over 1,700 islands covering almost 138 square miles in the southeastern United States. The word "Key" originates from the Spanish word Cayo meaning small island. The Keys are in the subtropics located between 24 and 25 degrees North Latitude with the southern tip of Key West just 94 miles from Cuba.
