  1. Modern Georgia SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, and political developments in Georgia since1970.

  3. Maynard Jackson • At the age of 35, Maynard Jackson became the first African-American mayor of a major southern city • He served as mayor of Atlanta from 1973-1981 and again from 1990-1994

  4. Maynard Jackson • He was helpful in providing more contract work to black-owned businesses • He expanded Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport • He sought to add more African American police officers and promotions for African American officers

  5. Maynard Jackson • During the 1990s, he worked with other important figures to bring the Olympics to Atlanta • He retired in 1994 due to health problems • He died in 2003 and in his honor, the city of Atlanta renamed the airport Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International

  7. Andrew Young • He was active in the Civil Rights Movement • He started working for the SCLC where he successfully organized demonstrations and voter registration campaigns throughout the South • He became a close associate with Martin Luther King, Jr. and was with him when he was assassinated

  8. Andrew Young • He was elected as Georgia’s first African-American Congressman in 1972 • He was later appointed ambassador to the United Nations • In 1981, he was elected mayor of Atlanta • As mayor, he helped Atlanta continue to grow and gain national standing

James E. “Jimmy” Carter – 39th President of the United States THE 1976 U.S. PRESIDENTIALELECTION By 1976, many Americans had lost trust in theirgovernment: The Vietnam War had been extremelyunpopular. President Nixon resigned as President after his involvement in the Watergatescandal. In what many considered a corrupt bargain, the new President, Gerald R. Ford, made the unpopular decisionto pardon Richard Nixon. SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, andpolitical developments in Georgia since1970.

  25. Lesson Four (SS8H12d) – The student will evaluate the effect of the 1996 Olympic Games on Georgia. The status of Georgia as a modern state and Atlanta as a world-class city was confirmed when Atlanta was selected to host the 1996 OlympicGames: Tremendous respect, recognition, and investment poured into Georgia from all over theworld. Atlanta and other Georgia cities gained new hotels, restaurants, athletic facilities, and the 21-acre CentennialPark SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, andpoliticaldevelopments in Georgia since1970.

  26. Lesson Four (SS8H12d) – The student will evaluate the effect of the 1996 Olympic Games on Georgia. Tremendous respect, recognition, and investment poured into Georgia from all over theworld!!! The estimated impact of the Olympics on Atlanta was over $5 BILLION. Most ofGeorgia’s economic fortune today is because of the Centennial OlympicGames. SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, andpoliticaldevelopments in Georgia since1970.

  27. Lesson Five (SS8H12e) – The student will evaluate the importance of new immigrant communities to the growth and economy ofGeorgia. Contributions to the state’s growth and economy have also come from growing immigrantcommunities: Georgia’s foreign-born population increased, between 1990 and 2000, by an incredible 233%. SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, andpoliticaldevelopments in Georgia since1970.

  28. Lesson Five (SS8H12e) – The student will evaluate the importance of new immigrant communities to the growth and economy ofGeorgia. Since the mid-1970s, Georgia has attracted a large number of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia,andLaos.More recently, immigrants have arrived from Africa, Eastern Europe, the MiddleEast.   29. Lesson Five (SS8H12e) – The student will evaluate the importance of new immigrant communities to the growth and economy ofGeorgia. Immigrants have had the largest impact on north Georgia, where the Hispanic population have moved to fill jobs in construction, poultry processing, and carpet manufacturing. Nearly ¼to ½ of all carpet mill workers are Hispanic immigrants. SS8H12 – The student will evaluate the importance of significant social, economic, andpoliticaldevelopments in Georgia since1970.
