  2. Balaji Vishwanath Bhatt, also known as Baji Rao I, was a prominent Maratha general and statesman who played a crucial role in expanding the Maratha Empire in India during the 18th century. He served as the Peshwa or prime minister of the Maratha Empire from 1713 until his death in 1740. Early Life and Rise to Power Balaji Vishwanath Bhatt was born in 1662 in the village of Shrivardhan, located in present-day Maharashtra, India. He belonged to the Chitpavan Brahmin caste, which was one of the most influential and powerful Brahmin communities in the region. He received a traditional education and was well-versed in Sanskrit, Marathi, and Persian. In 1699, Balaji Vishwanath Bhatt was appointed as the Peshwa or chief minister of the Maratha Empire by the Maratha king, Shahu I. He quickly established himself as a capable administrator and military strategist and helped the Marathas to consolidate their power in western India. Military Campaigns and Expansion of the Maratha Empire Under the leadership of Balaji Vishwanath Bhatt, the Marathas launched several successful military campaigns against the Mughal Empire, which was the dominant power in India at the time. He led the Maratha army in battles against the Mughals and their allies and was instrumental in expanding the Maratha Empire into northern India. One of his most significant military victories came in 1719 when he led the Maratha army to victory against the Mughals in the Battle of Bhopal. The battle was fought near the city of Bhopal and resulted in a decisive Maratha victory, which helped to establish the Marathas as a dominant power in northern India. Balaji Vishwanath Bhatt also played a crucial role in negotiating treaties with the Mughals and other regional powers, which helped to establish the Maratha Empire as a major player in Indian politics. He secured alliances with the Rajputs, the Nizam of Hyderabad, and other regional powers, which helped to maintain the stability and security of the Maratha Empire.
