PEOPLE Malhar Rao Holkar The Maratha Subedar who shaped 18th century India  BY MOHIT-KUMAR-SHARMA  MAR 16, 2023 14:27  Malhar Rao Holkar was a prominent Maratha subedar who played a crucial role in shaping the political and military landscape of 18th century India. He was born in 1694 in the village of Hol, near Indore in present-day Madhya Pradesh. Malhar Rao Holkar started his career as a soldier in the service of the Peshwa, Baji Rao I. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the most trusted commanders of the Maratha army. He was instrumental in the Maratha victories in the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761 and the Battle of Udgir in 1760. After the death of Baji Rao I in 1740, Malhar Rao Holkar played a crucial role in securing the position of the Peshwa's successor, Balaji Baji Rao. He also played a key role in expanding the Maratha Empire by conquering the territories of the Rajputs and the Mughals. In 1754, Malhar Rao Holkar was appointed as the subedar of Malwa, which was a strategic region located in central India. He governed the region with great efficiency and skill, and his rule was marked by peace and prosperity. Malhar Rao Holkar was known for his military prowess and his ability to forge alliances with other regional powers. He formed an alliance with the Jats of Bharatpur and the
