  2. National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is observed in India on the 11th of April every year. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of maternal health and the need for ensuring safe and healthy childbirth for every mother. The day also honors the memory of Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, who was a champion for women's rights and maternal health. The primary objective of NSMD is to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity rates across India. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India accounts for around 15% of maternal deaths worldwide. The government of India has taken several initiatives to improve maternal health, including the launch of the National Health Mission (NHM), which focuses on providing quality healthcare to women and children. The theme for NSMD 2021 was "Stay Safe, Stay Healthy: Ensuring Safe Motherhood during COVID-19 Pandemic". The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a significant challenge to the healthcare system in India, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable. The government of India has launched several measures to ensure that pregnant women receive timely and adequate healthcare during the pandemic. These measures include telemedicine consultations, home-based care for asymptomatic pregnant women, and the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers. In addition to the government's efforts, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are working towards improving maternal health in India. These organizations provide healthcare services, education, and support to pregnant women and new mothers, especially in rural areas where healthcare facilities are limited. It is essential to understand that maternal health is not just a healthcare issue but also a social issue. Improving maternal health requires a multi-sectoral approach that involves not only the healthcare sector but also education, social welfare, and women's empowerment. This approach can help address the underlying causes of poor maternal health, such as gender inequality, poverty, and lack of education. In conclusion, National Safe Motherhood Day is an important day for raising awareness about maternal health and the need for safe childbirth. While the government and NGOs are working towards improving maternal health in India, there is
