  1. January 15, 2019 Bell Ringer What is the best part about ordering something in a store rather than online?

  2. What is a Catalog Order? • Department stores have their own catalogs. You can have them send these to you and then place an order. • This is unlike buying online because you know that the item is new (unless it says otherwise). • When you buy off of Facebook or Craigslist, you need to take the word of a 3rd party. You should be hesitant about buying from just anyone on Facebook or Craigslist. The catalog is much more trustworthy and they handle complaints just like the department store.

  3. Placing A Order Online/ Catalog • Almost any item you want can be found in a catalog or online. How do you place an order or buy an item in this manner? • For a catalog, you can dill out an order form. Then you mail, email, or fax the completed order form to the company. You also send a check or credit card number to pay for the item. The item is then shipped to you.

  4. What Will The Catalog Form Ask For? • Most order forms ask for the item name, item number, color, size, quantity, and unit price. Sometimes you will see abbreviations on the order form. The abbreviation Qty means quantity. Each item that has its own item number should be on a different line of the order form. • Katie wants to buy two blue shirts in size mediums from a catalog. She found the item on page 20. The item number is 6-48J and the shirts have a retail price of $9.95 each. Let’s help her complete the information.

  6. Completing Your Order • When you place an order, you may need to pay a shipping charge. This is the amount the company charges for sending you the order. This may also happen with Facebook or Craigslist. • The total price may also include sales tax, depending on where you live. Sometimes the tax is calculated on the cost of the item and the cost of shipping. Watch for whether or not this is included.

  7. How do Shipping Charges Work? • Usually it costs more money to shop more items (more weight, more packages). Sometimes if you buy a certain amount of product, the shipping charge will actually be waived (or cancelled). Check to see if this is a possibility.

  8. Let’s Practice This… • So you are buying one video game and one DVD. The price for the game is $11.50 and the price for the game is $19.50. You will also be paying a 6% sales tax. What is the total cost of this order?
