  4. Causes of Mental Disorders • Genetics: a gene is passed from parent to child • Substance abuse • Abuse and neglect • Death of a loved one • Traumatic events • Dysfunctional and unstable family life

  5. What causes anxiety? Anxiety: an uneasy feeling or the act of worry about what may happen CAUSES: • Hormonal changes • Side effects of drug • Stress in personal relationships • Family problems • Financial stress • Use of illegal drugs • Emotional trauma • Stress from school • Serious medical illness

  6. Symptoms of Anxiety • Increased heart rate • Rapid breathing • Stomach ache • Feeling powerless • Sweating • Feeling weak or fatigue

  7. Generalized Anxiety Disorder Anxiety disorder is most common mental disorder among children. It affects approximately 10% of all children. Symptoms: • Always worried • Aches and pains • Tired easily yet has trouble sleeping • Constant body tension Types of Treatment: • Self-help coping strategies: • Exercise • Decrease stress in life • Deep breathing and relaxation techniques • Create a great support group of friends • Medication • Therapy

  9. Anxiety or Serious Anxiety? Jeff’s father has left the family home. His mother said that she wants a divorce. Jeff has not slept well in over a week and he worries that the family will not have enough money to buy food, much less remain in their house. He gets a little dizzy when he thinks about how he is going to take care of his little sister. He is so tired that he is unable to do his school work and his grades are beginning to suffer. Is his anxiety serious? Yes! Jeff is beginning to feel the physical and psychological effects of anxiety.

  10. Anxiety or Serious Anxiety? Bob hates to read out loud in class. One when he did, he stumbled on a word and everybody laughed. It embarrassed Bob. Since then, when the class reads aloud, he prays the teacher will not pick him. Is his anxiety serious? NO. Katie hates to play sports, and basketball is her least favorite. Once a month, the PE teacher makes all the students compete with each other. Just before it is Katie’s turn to play, she feels nervous, almost sick to her stomach. Once PE is over, she is fine. Is his anxiety serious? NO
