  2. Well done. You have decided to make a positive change through politics. Regardless of if you are running for office yourself, if you are a candidate or creating awareness for a cause, you will need sponsorship. The best way to get your message across is through events. Despite the pandemic and its restrictions, current political events still need to impress. This means that you need to show your guests you have not only a worthy cause, but credible support.  So how do you go about landing support for your political events through sponsors? The answers lie in these five steps:

  3. 1. Find Sponsors Whose Messaging Aligns With Yours  Taking the time to find sponsors who make sense for your campaign is imperative. Before approaching any brands or entities, make sure that your messages are aligned. The last thing you want is to associate your campaign with a brand that doesn’t serve the best interest of your supporters or beneficiaries, if you’re campaigning for a cause.  You will have a better chance of a long-term partnership if your messages are in synergy. Finding sponsors who support the same message you do won’t be hard. Use tools like social media to see which brands are affiliated with your cause or messaging. From there, you can focus on how they could sponsor your political events.

  4. 2. Tailor Your Proposal to Your Sponsors’ Objectives

  5. Similar to the above, you also need to make sure that the sponsorship will be mutually beneficial. Are you sure that by partnering with this brand, they will receive a positive return on investment? This is the first thing a sponsorship or marketing manager will look at. If it doesn’t make business sense for them, they won’t do it.  In your proposal, you need to make it clear to the potential sponsor why it makes sense for them to support you. Will their target audiences be present at the event? Will there be social media messaging that aligns with their communication objectives? You will need to consider previous sponsorships they’ve done and find how you can better that. Do adequate research on their recent partnerships and find out whether your campaign will be a good match.

  6. 3. Prepare Attractive Sponsorship Packages  Speaking of business sense, this is potentially the most important part of securing a sponsor for political events – how much money do they need to spend?  You don’t only need to appeal to the biggest brands out there, smaller corporations also look for causes to align to. For this reason, you should consider different package options. Each option will differ in price range, as well as return on investment (ROI). Depending on the packages you make available, the ROI should be greater as the price increases.  Consider how big your event is, and which items you will need financial assistance with. The easiest way to go about it is to curate about three sponsorship packages. Name the tiers something simple like Gold, Silver and Bronze. By presenting the different tiers to potential sponsors, you are giving them the opportunity to make the best decision to suit their budget.

  7. 4. Use Social Media for Your Political Events as an Added Value

  8. Social media remains king, nothing in the near future will change that. In the digital age, it is important to align your messaging across all the platforms you use. This cannot be overstated for political events, campaigns or causes.  People who are interested in supporting you will more than likely search for you on social networks. It is also likely that they originally found out about your cause via social media. Because of this, you need to keep your channels updated consistently, and if possible, have someone take care of your accounts full time. You can also use social media as a tool to sell more tickets.

  9. If you are running a successful account with a large following, this is an added value you can offer your sponsors. If they are looking to reach more people in your demographic, offer them this opportunity. You could do static posts on sites like Facebook and Instagram. You could also offer tweets in the form of a Q&A with your sponsor. This will result in people seeing the two accounts interact, and your sponsor may gain new followers from this. A more popular approach to take is to go live on social media. Many platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube offer this function. This is a great way to get an authentic message across to your audience. You could either do a joint live, or have your sponsor take over your account to address your audience. Remember, it will need to be a topic that resonates with them. The more genuine the messaging is, the more successful the collaboration will be.

  10. 5. Use Data to State Your Case

  11. Last but not least, show them the numbers. Why should potential sponsors be interested in your event? Why would they want to sponsor and align with your brand? It’s imperative that you have data to support why your event will be successful.  To demonstrate this, prepare a spreadsheet or presentation with the information you have thus far. This could be stats from social media showing atteendee’s interest, or information from former political events if this isn’t your first one.

  12. If you use any digital advertising for your social media pages, providing statistics on click-throughs will also be helpful. If you would like to take it a step further, personalize your data. In advance, run a poll on your stories or on Twitter, using the brand you would like to get on board. Ask your audiences if they would like the brand to be involved, and show them the results if they are positive. It will show a direct link between your campaign and the brand.  These five steps are meant to act as a guideline into securing the ideal sponsors for your upcoming political events.
