  2. Birthday • Eli Whitney was born on December 8th, 1765 and he died January 8th, 1825 • He died at the age of 60

  4. What made him big • Eli Whitney was famous for making the cotton gin. • The cotton gin is a mechanical device that removes the seeds from cotton. • The word 'gin' is short for engine. • The cotton gin was a wooden drum stuck with hooks that pulled the cotton fibers through a mesh.

  5. What was he trying to do • Eli Whitney was trying to cut down slavery by making a machine named the cotton gin • His plan backfired because the cotton made an outbreak in slaves do to the fact that the more slaves they had the more cotton they could have.

  7. How the Cotton Gin works • The cleaned cotton fibers, minus the seeds, are then extracted through the wire teeth of the grid like comb and sorted in a pan on the other side.

  8. How did he die • Whitney died of prostate cancer on January 8, 1825, in New Haven, Connecticut, just a month after his 59th birthday.
