  2. Allusion • When a book references another famous book or historical event and does not explain that event.

  3. Allusion Examples • As the cave's roof collapsed, he was swallowed up in the dust like Jonah, and only his frantic scrabbling behind a wall of rock indicated that there was anyone still alive". "Christy didn't like to spend money. She was no Scrooge, but she seldom purchased anything except the bare necessities". What famous stories are alluded to in these passages? • Jonah and the Whale from the Old Testament of the Bible • The character, Scrooge, from “A Christmas Carol”

  4. Irony • The situation turns out different from what you expected. • Two Types: • Situational • Dramatic

  5. Situational Irony • It is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is the opposite to what was expected.

  6. Example of situational irony • Two couples go to court to conclude their divorce. However, by a twist, the couples suddenly discover a bond of love during court proceedings and decide to remarry instead.

  7. Dramatic Irony • It is irony that is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play.

  8. Example of Dramatic irony • In a movie about the Titanic, a character leaning on the balcony right before the ship hits the iceberg says, "It's so beautiful I could just die."

  9. Theme • It is the main idea in a story, or it is the general lesson about life learned. • One word themes • Survival, friendship, giving, family, heritage

  10. Theme • Telling the truth is always best. • Be generous to other, and others will be generous to you. • Fight for what is right. • Family is more important than money.
