Vocabulary • Exile • Forced out of country/home as a punishment. • Elegy • Mournful poem • Sanctuary • A place where you feel safe and protected. • Refuge • A place that protects you from something threatening, harmful, or unpleasant. You Must Know These Words! Be prepared to see them on quizzes/tests!

  3. Pre-Reading • Make a list of some of your current grievances. • Think: What are some of the things going wrong in your life? What are your complaints?

  4. Pre-Reading Part 2 • Open to “The Wife’s Lament” on page 25. • Based on the picture, what do you think the tone of the poem will be? What will the elegy be about?

  5. Read the poem! • Read the poem as a class. • Look for particular lines and ideas that prove this is an elegy.

  6. Post Reading • Did the poem fit your predictions? • What was the wife’s lament? • What does the wife mourn? • FIND PROOF FROM THE TEXT FOR YOUR ANSWERS!!!!

  7. Exit Slip • Read lines 6-20. Based on the text, speculate the type of plot the husband’s kinsmen may have used to try and separate the couple. Support your answer with evidence from the text.
