  3. BOYS did you know… • That you are 2 times more likely to go to hospital with a cycle related injury the girls. • 2227 boys were injured in a 5 year period (2001-2005) compared with 913 girls.

  4. BOYS!!! • Nearly 5times as many boys are killed cycling. In the 10 years 1993-2002, 52 children were killed in NZ 43 were boys… 9 were girls.

  5. What are cycle related injuries? Starship Hospital tracked cycle injuries over a 6 month period • Upper limb fractures 36% • Lower limb fractures 18% • Face and neck injuries 14% • Head injuries 12% • Abdominal injuries 9% • Other-skin and lung injuries

  6. Head Injuries include… • Skull fractures • Concussions • Intracranial injury • Scalp lacerations

  7. Always wear your helmet when on your bike… Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of: • Brain injury by 88% • Head injury by 85% • Severe brain injury by at least 75%

  8. Reasons why kids don’t wear helmets… • Nobody gave me 1! 17% • I don’t road in traffic. 15% • Unattractive. 5% • I don’t ride often. 9% • Too expensive. 7% • Uncomfortable. 9% • I took it off. 16% • Not necessary. 21% • Never thought about it. 22%
