  2. hello@thisisselfhood.com When you run something such as a corner shop or a newsagents or sometimes both, there are things that you sell that your customers are always going to want. For instance, there are the daily papers, and they rarely change, and much the same goes for your local paper, so customers who want to keep up with the news will always be customers. It doesn’t matter whether those customers are 20 or 80, they will still buy the papers. But there are many businesses that are in industries or sectors that change, or that don’t keep up with the latest developments, and sometimes they go broke as a result. Think of brands like F. W. Woolworth, Toys R Us, Blockbuster, Polaroid, Pan Am. Those were very big companies, but they failed to keep up with changing fashions and so they no longer exist.

Carrying out youth research in your particular sector will enable you to see what it is that the younger generation are going to want and adapt your business accordingly. We carry out youth research in a number of different ways. So, for example, we can go out into the field and see what is happening and take notes of what we have seen and heard. We can also carry out surveys by distributing questionnaires with open-ended questions in order to establish what Gen Z wants.

One can also do the same thing with focus groups and get responses from groups of people. If you want your business to succeed as times change, then carrying out youth market research is critical. These people may not have a lot of money today, but as they progress in their careers they will become the customers of the future – provided you can offer what they want.
