  4. Introductions Introduce yourself to your table mates sharing your role and school district. EngageNY.org

  5. Reflection Jot down current successes with Module implementation. Write down some current obstacles or barriers with Module implementation. EngageNY.org

  6. Funnel Protocol: From Top to the Tip • Each participant lists top 3 barriers; one per sticky note regarding staffing or scheduling. • Facilitator reads ALL sticky notes. • Categorize sticky notes. • Identify one priority in each category. • Select a SINGLE sticky note-the group must come to consensus.   7. Read, Turn, and Talk “The principal, along with the literacy leadership team, needs to examine the school schedule to find time to meet critical literacy learning needs. Most successful schools have arranged to provide additional instructional time for students who are reading below grade level. Schools do this in a variety of creative ways, including extended instructional blocks during the day, before and afterschool sessions, and summer programs.” • (Torgesen et al 2007) EngageNY.org

Read and Annotate • Choose one of two options: • Teaching All Students to Read in Elementary Schools: A Guide for Principals • Improving Literacy Instruction in Middle and High Schools: A Guide for Principals • Use the note-catcher, “Notice; Wonder; Take-Aways” on p. ___ to record your thinking. • Note any suggestions in the article that may support solutions to the obstacles and barriers you expressed in the previous protocol.   10. Pair-up Find a partner who read the article you did NOT read. Share key learning from the text. EngageNY.org

  11. Brainstorming Solutions Notice the charts around the room with the prioritized topics from the Funnel Protocol. Form 2 groups at your table. Carousel around the room and chart solutions to the barriers/obstacles that are listed. Once all solutions are charted, we will do a silent gallery walk. EngageNY.org

  12. Turn and Talk What are your notices and wonders from the gallery walk? EngageNY.org

  13. Action Planning Work through the Guiding Questions on the Action Planning Task Card on p. ___ regarding current staffing and scheduling practices. When finished, complete the action steps on the task card. EngageNY.org

  14.
