  1. Welcome to Science 07/31/17 Please line up in alphabetical order by last name then sit in a seat staying in order.

  2. Mrs. Kuropas (Ms. K) • Mom of 4 boys: • Markian (University of Alabama: first year) • Alexander and Justin (WFHS: 11th and 9th grades) • Zenon (HMS track 1: 7th grade) • Grew up in New England with elem in Dallas • NCSU – middle grades math/science • Aquinas – pastoral studies (religion) • Love music and sports (soccer) • 4th year at RMS

  3. My Teaching Philosophy I believe that everyone of you WILL learn in my class Being a good student is NOT just about a grade but WHAT you have learned I will not let ANYTHING keep you from succeeding in my class

  4. What will we be learning this year? 1st Quarter: Forces and Motion 2ndQuarter:Weather 3rd Quarter:Cells 4th Quarter:Genetics and Human Body Systems

  5. Materials • Composition Notebook (1 each semester): This notebook will contain notes, diagrams, and reading/writing assignments. • Supplies (REPLACE AS NEEDED): Pens(black or black ink), Pencils, Highlighter(s), colored pencils, glue sticks. • Agenda: your agenda is very important. This will be used to write down assignments, projects, quiz and test dates.

  6. Homework Policy You are responsible for reviewing your notes every school night. Not completing homework on time will severely hinder your understanding in this class. If there is an emergency please come to me BEFORE the assignment is due. Please make sure that you write down your homework EVERY MORNING in your agenda.

  7. Interactive Notebook Organization INB’s are to be up-to-date and organized. To help with this, pages should be numbered and labeled with all assignments in order. You will have a Table of Contents at the beginning of each new unit. It is your responsibility to keep up with all assignments and to keep your INB orderly and organized. You will be given minimal time in class to get these organized.

  8. Nerd Words • Each week, you will have a list of vocabulary words and will need to choose an activity from the tic-tac-toe chart to complete. • This list also includes the objectives and essential questions for each unit. • Will be used as a marker between notebook checks.

  9. Science Thoughts Each day as you enter class there will be a question or prompt on the board. You are to respond to this question on the SCIENCE THOUGHTS page in your INB. You will have a new page each week. The questions asked will serve as a study guide for future tests and quizzes. All entries are to be dated.

  10. A typical response will include the question, the date of the entry and a thorough answer. The questions will be checked EVERY DAY and the Science Thought sheets in your INB will be graded weekly. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the questions asked while you were gone. Missing entries will result in point deductions when INB is checked.

  11. Test/Quizzes You will be notified of a test or quiz at least one week in advance. If you have kept up with and corrected your Science Thoughts, as well as, studied your notes and kept up with your reading before the test, you most likely will perform well on the tests. You can expect a test at the end of each unit with quizzes scattered throughout the entire unit.

  12. Science Labs Lab activities are a privilege and several are scheduled for this year. Most will be done with a partner or with groups. You and your group are expected to stay in your assigned area and keep that area clean and safe. Failure to comply with the rules of the lab will result in your immediate expulsion from science class.

  13. Safety We will read and go over the safety rules before performing any lab activities. If you do not have a contract on file, please ask me for one, take it home, and return to me signed by you and your parents/guardian. Without a contract on file, you will not be permitted to participate in lab activities.

  14. Restroom Privileges It is assumed that you use the time between classes to use the restroom and take care of personal business. However, everyone has emergencies from time to time. In case of an emergency you will be expected to put your thumb up, wait to be recognized with a nod, then sign out at the front table, leave your phone in the basket and return back to the classroom as promptly as possible.

  15. Absences If you are absent, check the “what did I miss?” folder and teacher notebook. If you missed a lab, quiz, test, or another type of assignment that cannot be completed on your own, please see me during lunch. If work was due the day you were absent, it is due when you return to school.

  16. GradingAssignments will receive points reflecting the amount of time, energy, and effort required to complete each assignment. Letter grades are determined by the number of points you have earned for your work. Grades will be posted on PowerSchool on a weekly basis. Major Grades (60%) Tests Labs Projects/Presentations Minor Grades (40%) Quizzes Classwork/Homework (INB) Group Presentations

  17. Where is…/ When Can I???? • Extra Student supplies (glue, colored pencils, scissors) on desk in bin • Pens/Pencils/Notebook Paperon desk in front of room-if you borrow my supplies, PLEASE return • Daily Work Folder and Extras NBon demo desk • Sharpen my pencil?-Before class or after I'm done with my instruction • Get up to throw something away-Afteryou have raised your hand and have been recognized- don’t interrupt my instruction • Get a tissue-quietly walk to the front or back of the room without disturbing class instruction

  19. Letter to Ms. K For the assignment, which will be completed for homework, you are asked to write a letter to me on google classroom. Please be reminded that each of the 8 paragraphs needs to be at least 4 complete sentences. Feel free to decorate it to add your own flair!

  20. Science Thought 8/1 What are our five units of study this year? 1st Quarter: Forces and Motion 2nd Quarter: Weather 3rd Quarter: Cells 4th Quarter: Genetics and Human Body Systems

  21. Bioglyphs Complete the Bioglyph as instructed

  22. INB 101:How to Use Your Interactive Notebook 2017-2018 Science

  23. What is an INB? • It is a working portfolio (all of your notes, classwork, etc.) in one convenient spot! • It is an individual, personalized notebook that allows you to record and process information in an engaging manner.

  24. Why do we use an INB? • It allows you to process and retain concepts more easily! • You can use it to thoroughly review for quizzes and tests! • It helps you keep track of your assignments, homework and class work on a daily basis! • It serves as a study tool for the EOGs,NCFEs!

  25. Why do we use an INB? Best of all… The INB allows you to personalize your learning experiences by having a way to reflect thoughtfully, creatively, and individually! I like music! I like to draw! I like to write poetry! There’s something for everyone!!!

  26. MY PART receiving thecontent Everything you get from Mrs. Kuropas has information that all students must know for tests/quizzes • Handouts, notes, lab sheets

  27. Glue it in! ALWAYS start the page with the date, page title, and entrynumber at the top of the page. ALWAYS record the information in the Table of Contents

  28. WORKSHEETS DONE IN CLASS NOTES GIVEN BY THE TEACHER For example… RESOURCE/ INFORMATION PAGES NOTES TAKEN DURING VIDEOS

  29. YOUR PART Reflections are where you showlearning. Reflections are where you record your PROCESSING of the notes, handouts, etc. provided by the teacher. Simply writing down notes does NOT mean that you have learned the information.

  30. YOUR PART Reflections must take up at least ¾ of the page. used for your interaction with the information using pictures, graphs, etc. ALWAYS USE AT LEAST 4 COLORS, because colors help the brain learn and organize information

  31. Write a short story! Create an acrostic poem! For Example… Create a playlist and CD cover! Create a timeline of events!

  32. Maintaining your Interactive Notebook • Glue everything down as soon as you get it! • Update your table of contents regularly! • Be gentle when placing your INB in your locker so the edges don’t get mangled! • No doodling that doesn’t relate to notes! • No ripped out pages or torn corners! • Treat it like a fragile little baby.

  33. Gluing Pages Into Your INB • For single sided sheets, glue the corners and a spot in the middle. Covering the entire page with glue is not an effective method and wastes our resources. • For double sided sheets, put a strip of glue down one side of the paper or along the top. This allows you to see both sides of the page! • If you come across a “dead” glue stick, please place it in the trashcan. • If borrowing a glue stick from Mrs. Kuropas, return it to the appropriate container when you are done gluing.

  34. Every Unit will have: • “Nerd Words” – vocabulary sheet given followed by your work • “Science Thoughts” – all on one page (one week) • “Reflection” – choose method to show a summary of what you have learned • Worksheets, labs, notes GRADED EVERY MONDAY!

  35. Lab Equipment Complete the worksheets about materials used in the science lab

  36. Lab Safety • List 3 unsafe activities shown in the illustration and explain why each is unsafe. • List 3 correct lab procedures depicted in the illustration. • What should Bob do after the accident? • What should Sue have done to avoid an accident? • Compare Luke and Duke’s lab techniques. Who is following the rules? • What are the three things shown in the lab that should not be there? • Compare Joe and Carl’s lab techniques. Who is doing it the correct way? • What will happen to Ray and Tim when the teacher catches them? • List three items in the illustration that are there for the safety of the students in the lab.

  37. Lab Safety Poster Project Complete poster according to directions on sheet – sheet goes into INB
