  1. Bell Ringer • Turn to the person sitting next to you and together explain the election of 1912. How was Wilson able to win the election? • When finished look up and be prepared to share as a whole class review.

Chapter 9.5Wilson’s New Freedom • Analyze the significant progressive achievements during the administration of Wilson, including new freedom, the Underwood Tariff, the Federal Reserve Act, and the Clayton Anti-Trust Act • Students will identify and explain Wilson’s reform as a progressive leader.

  3. Wilson’s Background • Lived in the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction • Lawyer, History Professor • served as Governor of New Jersey with a Progressive agenda

  4. Wilson’s New Freedom • 1.. Clayton Antitrust Act strengthened the Sherman Antitrust Act, freed labor unions and farm organizations from antitrust laws; prohibited most injunctions against strikers • 2. Federal Trade Commission set up the Federal Trade Commission with power to investigate corporations and unfair business practices

  5. Legislation & Constitutional Amendments • 3. The Underwood Tariff substantially reduced tariff rates for the first time since the Civil War • 4. The sixteenth amendment legalized a federal income tax • 5. The Federal Reserve Act established the Federal Reserve System, a decentralized private banking system under federal control

  6. The Suffrage Movement • This movement became successful due to grass roots groups, the use of new strategies to build enthusiasm; regeneration of the national movement under Carrie Chapman Catt • 6. The Nineteenth Amendment recognized women’s right to vote

  7. Wilson & Civil Rights • Wilson opposed federal antilynching legislation; appointed segregationists to his cabinet; failed to oppose the resegregation of federal offices
