  1. NOT AT ALL! Kevin and Alec Woo!

  2. TITLE! • I predict that the poem will be about people struggling not to get AIDs, how people don’t think they will get it, and people denying it. • That’s it. • YAY!

  3. PARAPHRASE! • The granddaughter is telling her grandmother about how AIDs is very different from any other sickness. • All the other sicknesses came but then they left but AIDs doesn’t go away. • That’s it. • YAY!

  4. CONNOTATION! • Simile- “it is like the mamba” • A mamba is a snake whose venom attacks the heart and nervous system and kills very fast • Simile- “it is like a thorn that pricks continuously” • This probably means something that never goes away and is very painful • Simile- “it is like a fire that burns in hell” • this explains how evil it is and how much they hate it • “the mamba struck once without sympathy leaving behind great sorrow” • This could mean that after somebody gets AIDs it can spread to many people making them DIE! And make them all sad 

  5. ATTITUDE! • The speaker’s attitude: • Is slightly angry and frustrated at his grandmother because she can’t understand that AIDs is worse than the other sicknesses. • The poet’s attitude: • Is calm because he’s showing everybody what AIDs is doing without too much anger.

  6. SHIFTS! • The major shift in the poem is when the speaker changes from telling her grandmother how AIDs is worse than anything that happened in her lifetime, to telling what AIDs does to people and why it’s worse. • That’s it. • YAY!

  7. TITLE!................AGAIN! • The title has a different meaning now because it explains how AIDs is much, much worse than any other disease or sickness. • “Is it like smallpox, which took your grandfather in his youthful days?” “Not at all, grandmother.” • This is saying that AIDs is worse than even the worst sicknesses.

  8. THEME! • We think that the themes are….. • Be prepared for AIDs because it is not at all like any other sickness. • Know what AIDs is because if you don’t know how to protect yourself, it will take your life as quick as a mamba. • That’s it. • YAY!
