  7. Discussion Board & Seminar • To get full credit on the DB you need to: • Post your original response with a reference (this is a must) for each question • Respond to at least 2 classmates for each question • Write in complete sentences with an attempt at good grammar • To get full credit in seminar you must: • Attend for at least 40 minutes • Make at least 20 postings in the time you are in class

  8. Questions? • Any questions regarding grading policies? • I firmly believe in allowing learners to learn from their own work. I will always accept papers/projects ahead of time for a personal review by me. I will provide substantial feedback to you personally. However, you must give me at least 3 days before the assignment is due. • I will also allow you to resubmit any paper or project for a better grade. You can earn up to half the points lost back to improve your grade. The number of points earned back depends on the corrections and/or additions that you make to the paper/project when you resubmit it. I will accept project resubmits up to the end of unit 9.

  9. Other points you can earn • Any item may be resubmitted or added to in order gain points back. • For example: Say you only earned 15/20 on your discussion board for the week; if you rework, add to or improve that assignment after grading based on my comments you can earn points back • I also allow you to earn points for coming to the live seminar and doing option 2 seminar. This will add up to 3 points on your DB for that week only. This is not a Kaplan policy.

  10. Extenuating Circumstances If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing projects, quizzes or participating in the class, please contact me to make alternative arrangements. I believe in active communication as the key to overcoming any hurdles you may encounter during the term. If you are unable to contact me, you should contact your academic advisor.

  11. Incompletes • Incompletes provide students with limited additional time to complete coursework after the term’s end. • To be considered for an incomplete, you should have completed approximately 75% of the coursework. • Please see the Kaplan University catalog for further information. Whether or not to grant an incomplete is your instructor’s decision. • The deadline for requesting an incomplete for the August A term is Monday, October 3. Incomplete coursework is due October 21, 2011.

  12. Plagiarism Policy Kaplan University considers academic honesty to be one of its highest values. Students are expected to be the sole authors of their work. Use of another person’s work or ideas must be accompanied by specific citations and references. Though not a comprehensive or exhaustive list, the syllabus provides some examples of dishonesty or unethical and unprofessional behavior. Please review this policy!!!! 19. The Scientific Method From “Steps of the Scientific Method” at http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/project_scientific_method.shtml

  20. The Scientific Method Definition: a method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from these data and the hypothesis is empirically tested. (www.dictionary.com, 2010) Empirical evidence is not subjective, it doesn't differ based on the observer, not subject to different interpretations; objective evidence. How do you find “objective evidence?”

  21. Seminar Questions • How will you utilize critical thinking & ethical reasoning in this course? • What does “Historical Context” refer to? • What does “Personal Context” mean? • How will cultural diversity affect your work in this course? • How will you begin to organize your thoughts?

  22. Any Questions? The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing, we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and scramble through as well as we can. ~Robert Cushing Inspirational Quotes at http://www.inspirational-quotes.info/growth.html
