  1. Potential of NASA’s MODIS Terra and Aqua imagesin fire incident management and forecast • Images are available in near-realtime at 250m spatial resolution • Current OPERATIONAL fire products (MOD 14) and perimeters are only available at 1 km resolution

  2. 10th Largest fire on the record in California since 1933 NASA’s MODIS Terra (250m): Surface Reflectance images Fire Perimeter 27-Aug. to 9-Sep. 2009 Color code Green color: Vegetation Red/brownish red: Burn Scar

  4. Evolution of Fire Perimeter

  5. Major Limitations Accuracy of fire perimeter derived from surface reflectance (near-realtime, MODIS Terra) is limited by: • Clouds • Thick Smoke • Geolocation accuracy Advantages of near-real time Here, the fire perimeter is derived from 250m (spatial resolution) data. Current active FIRE maps, from USDA Forest Service, is available at 1 km. MODIS fire product, MODIS MOD14, is also available at only 1 km resolution. Accuracy of fire spread model (such as FARSITE) can be assessed using temporal evolution of fire perimeter. MODIS 250m data not only gives better resolution of fire perimeter but also shows major active fire regions. Near real time availability of fire perimeter and active fire region (pre-noon and after-noon).
