  3. Our Creative Curriculum To provide a rich and stimulating experience, we embrace learning in our classrooms and in the outdoor environment. Our planning across the curriculum is based around our topic. We find this is a great way of engaging the children with their learning.

  4. TOPICS Autumn term The Great Fire of London Spring term The Magic of Toys Summer term Seaside Holidays

  5. What is phonics? The goal of phonics is to enable readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds called ‘phonemes’. They decode the sounds then blend them back together to form the word. Th i s i s m y h ou s e.

  6. What is phonics? We encourage the children to use actions when segmenting and blending new words together. This helps them to identify the sounds within the words more easily. You may have heard the children using these terms at home when you are reading together. A Phoneme – a single clap. A digraph- two bent finger. A trigraph- three bent fingers. A split vowel digraph- a jumping finger.

  7. What is phonics? A Phoneme can be represented by a single letter ‘c’ ‘a’ ‘t’. A digraph is a single sound, or phoneme, which is represented by two letters. ‘ch’, ‘th’, ‘ee’, ‘oo’, ‘ou’, ‘oi’. Chip meet book cloud coin

  8. What is phonics? A trigraph is a phoneme which consists of three letters. ‘igh’, ‘air’, ‘ure’ high, sure, millionaire A split vowel digraph ‘i_e,’ ‘a_e’, like, make

  9. Reading Please encourage your child to read daily, and record this in their reading record. The children benefit when reading remains fun, with opportunities to read to a variety of people. Questioning your child on the characters, story plot and predicting what might happen next, are all good reading skills to help develop comprehension of the text.

  10. Reading It is important for your child to have a go at sounding out the words using their knowledge of Phonics to read the text.

  11. How can you help? • Please complete the Reading Record. • Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: • Sound out using their knowledge of Phonics. • Re-read to check it makes sense. • Ask comprehension questions: • On page…it says………What does this tell you about the setting? • Find three words that tell you how………?

  12. Literacy In class we teach the children to create their sentences verbally using Kung-Fu punctuation. The wood was as dark as the midnight sky.

  13. Maths The children play games in class to learn their number bonds. You can play this game at home to support and embed this learning. High Ten 7-3, 9-1, 6-4, 8-2

  14. Maths The children are taught many different strategies to solve mathematical problems. Apparatus Number lines Unstructured number lines

  17. Handwriting Policy • Cursive writing style encouraged to ease transition to fluid, joined approach in later years. • Please encourage children to write in lower case cursive and not capitals. • Encourage child to use tripod grip.

  18. Homework Spellings The new spellings will be sent home on a Wednesday. The children should practise every night in preparation for their spelling test each Monday. Maths and Literacy The homework relates to the work done in class and should also be returned to school each Monday. Encourage the children to use Kung-Fu punctuation to support their writing.

  19. Please take some time to explore the selection of learning activities in the hall and feel free to ask us any questions. Thank you! Year 1/2 Team 
