  8. STAGE ONE – 7 minutes • You have been given an info sheet about one aspect of the 1961 Berlin crisis. • You have 7 minutes to read through the sheet and study it, on your own. You need to pick out the key points and try to remember them. • After 7 minutes, the info sheet will be collected back in. You will have to explain what it said, to the best of your ability/memory, to the rest of your table. • You can highlight points on the sheet, and jot down bullet points on the sheet, but you can’t write anything in your book or anywhere else at this stage.

  9. CAUSE: The refugee crisis • Why was capitalism in West Berlin an embarrassment to the USSR? • How many East Germans had been escaping to the West through Berlin, and how were they able to? • CAUSE: West Germany gets stronger and stronger: • How had West Germany grown in strength since the airlift? • Why did Khrushchev and the USSR see this as a problem? • What demands did Khrushchev make to the Western Allies in 1958 and 1961? The Berlin Crisis 1961: the causes & what happened • CAUSE: Failed summit meeting of May 1960 • Who was going to meet at the meeting? • What was the purpose of the meeting? • Why did it fail to happen? (The U2 crisis.) • WHAT HAPPENED: Khrushchev builds the Berlin Wall (August 1961): • How did this happen? Describe the building of the Wall. • What was the impact of the Wall on Berlin, and on Europe?

  10. STAGE TWO – 25-30 minutes • Each person on the table takes it in turns to explain to the others the info that was on their info sheet. As they explain, everyone else takes notes in their book. Number 1s go first, and so on. • There will be focus questions on the board to help the explainer know what they need to explain. • Listeners should ask the explainers questions if they don’t understand something/they need further explanation. • The explainer doesn’t write notes themselves at this point – this is done in stage three. • Before we start this stage, everyone needs to get the 4 headings written down in their book…..
