  1. “That Night when joy began” Patrick Lawrence

  2. Title • “That Night When Joy Began” makes me think that this poem could be about Christmas or someone's Birthday. It could also be about love and someone getting married. There is also the possibility that it could be about anything that brings someone joy or finally getting that one thing that they have been wanting.

  3. Paraphrase • I interpreted this poem as coming from the point of view of a soldier. The soldier is waking up expecting the usual morning fight but looking out across the field to realize that there is no fight coming just yet. “We waited for the flash of morning’s levelled gun” is saying that they are waiting for the usual morning artillery barrage. “As mile by mile is seen no trespasser’s reproach” meaning that the usual morning attackers are not there.

  4. Connotation • There is no rhyme scheme found in “That Night When Joy Began.” • Auden uses imagery to appeal to his audience. Auden uses sight and sound to appeal to his audience. • Sound: “Outgrows his nervous laugh”, “Of morning’s levelled gun.” (I chose this for sound because you can hear the gun not only see the flash from the gun. • Sight: “As mile by mile is seen” and “We waited for the flash”

  5. Attitude • When I read this poem I get a feel of gratefulness and anxiety. In the second stanza, there is a feel of gratefulness because they realize that as the morning passes there is not going to be an attack and just peace and quiet. The first stanza has an anxious feel to it because the men are waiting for the morning attack and the artillery fire.

  6. Shift • There are three shifts in the poem. • The first shift is in the first stanza which is anxiety • The second stanza has a sense of relief and gratefulness • The third stanza also has a sense of gratefulness of life and God’s creation “No fields but are his own.”

  7. Title • “That Night When Joy Began” is about the “joy” of finally not getting attacked in war. The realization of no attack brings joy to the soldier and allows him to finally feel joyful and relieved again.

  8. Theme • War • Peace • Death • God
