  1. Romans: 4. Human Sinfulness: Oppression & Deception Romans 3:8-20 p. 1039

  2. Building the case against humanity • Diatribe against everyone who does not seek God • Taking on the self-righteous Pagan • Taking on the Law abiding Jew: Law & Circumcision • Today: We are all – • Under SIN • Under RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT • Under CONVICTION

  3. 1. Under SIN • Word “power” not in Greek – Lit: “under sin” • “Power” highlights the essence of Paul’s point • Does not say we are “sinners” • Says we are “under sin” • Sin: not just something we do • A power that holds us captive! • We are culpable for this state of affairs! • We are not just victims • We are co-conspirators with sin in our rebellion against God! • We are “under sin” and we are guilty for it!

  4. 2. Under RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT • Paul makes a final justification for his case – Law • Section begins and ends with how we defy the first commandment (to worship/love God) • No-one is righteous, seeks God (v 10, 11) • No fear of God (v 18, cf: Prov 1:7) • Middle section (v 12-17): • How this works out: turned away, worthless, ruin • Connected to our whole being: throats, tongues, feet

  5. 2. Under RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT . . . • Law not simply a way of righteousness - it already tells us we fail! • Sheds a critical light on God’s salvation Plan: • NOT: • Plan A: creation >> sin >> Law >> Disobedience >> Failure • Plan B: Failure >> Jesus >> righteousness by faith >> Salvation • BUT: Creation >> Sin >> Law >> Convict of Sin >> Jesus >> Faith >> Salv. • Paul will prove that “righteousness by faith” was always the way!!

  6. 3. Under CONVICTION • Every one of us stands guilty before God • “every mouth silenced . . . [all] accountable to God” • Paul is about to reveal the glory of salvation! • None of us deserve it . . . We all need it ! ! ! • Two verses: seem contradictory: • 2:13 Lit: “doers of the law ... Declared righteous” • 3:20 Lit: “by works of law no-one declared righteous” • Two different phrases! • “Doing” - obedience to 1st commandment (Dt 5:7; 6:5)

  7. Huge Section Establishes our sinfulness before God THIS WEEK Continue to open our hearts before God Come to him in repentance
