  1. ANTWON JACKSON SERVICE-LEARNING

  2. SERVICE-LEARNING To me • Service-learning combines community service and learning and reflecting to create a positive a environment.

  3. Service-Learning definitions • Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Through service-learning, young people—from kindergarteners to college students—use what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. They not only learn the practical applications of their studies, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform. http://www.servicelearning.org/what-service-learning

  4. Definitions cont. • Service learning combines community service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in activities that address local needs while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community. http://www.aacc.nche.edu/Resources/aaccprograms/horizons/Pages/default.aspx

  5. BENEFITS OF SERVICE-LEARNING • Increased sense of self-efficacy as young people learn that they can impact real social challenges, problems, and needs. • Higher academic achievement and interest in furthering their education. • Enhanced problem-solving skills, ability to work in teams, and planning abilities. • Young people gain access to the range of supports and opportunities (or developmental assets) they need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible • http://www.servicelearning.org/benefits-community-based-service-learning

  6. MY SERVICES • I read books and did arts & crafts activities at an elementary school. • I also did various aerobics and physical activities with an elementary school P.E. class. I did not have parental permission To use the kids pictures for my powerpoint

  7. What I got out of this • I learned that it doesn’t take a lot to make a kid smile. • The joy of knowing I helped make a difference in a Childs life.

  8. There was one autistic student that warmed up to me through basketball. I showed him how to shoot the ball in between the square on the backboard. The huge smile he showed after he made three in a row really showed me how it’s the little things in life that make you happy.

  9. I also learned that you don’t have to be famous for kids to look up to you. Just because I had on a Valdosta State football jersey, the students wanted to be around and have fun with me. It’s a great feeling to make kids you never seen before smile.
