3. Imagery • Imagery is language that causes the reader / listener to imagine something • It is the use of vivid imaginative language - literal (concrete) or figurative (metaphoric) - to represent objects, actions, or ideas • It is used in poetry and in prose and normally involves the senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell • It generates a set of mental pictures or images of things or events: e.g. "He could still hear the wind howling in his imagination"

Imagery - Vivid Literal Language • To create images with words writers use vivid literal,concrete words: emotive and descriptive words; nounsadjectives,verbs and adverbs… • Nouns – names of things • Adjectives – describe things • Verbs – actions and feelings • Adverbs – qualify verbs The gauntgirlgalloped gleefully

Imagery - Allusion • Allusion is a brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or fictitious, or to a work of art or a casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event • When referring to texts it is also known as intertextuality or an intertextual reference • Many songs use allusion • It adds interest and imagery: if the audience understands the reference they can easily imagine and understand the connection

13. LITERARY TECHNIQUES - IRONY 1. VERBAL IRONY - When a person says one thing but means the opposite e.g. Saying “You look happy today” to someone who looks miserable. 2. SITUATIONAL IRONY – When there is a difference between what is expected and what actually happens. e.g .As in the Lyrics from “Ironic” by Alanis Morrisette… “An old man turned ninety-eight, he won the lottery and died the next day …It's a death row pardon two minutes too late … It's a free ride when you've already paid…” 3. DRAMATIC IRONY – A literary technique in which the audience can perceive a hidden meaning unknown to the character. e.g. As in Macbeth: when Duncan approaches Macbeth’s castle it is ironic that he says to Banquo, “This castle hath a pleasant seat” because we know that the Macbeths are plotting his death. Irony has three main effects in literature: 1. To show folly in an amusing way 2. As a form of criticism and to show anger 3. To show the tragedy or sadness of a situation

15. LITERARY TECHNIQUES - PARODY • A comic imitation of a particular writer’s style. It is funny because it presents elements of the original in a humorous way • The following poem, Icarus Allsorts is a parody of Sing a Song of Sixpence – it also a play on words alluding the Greek God Icarus Sing a Song of Sixpence Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye, Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. When the pie was opened the birds began to sing, Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king? The king was in his counting house counting out his money, The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes, When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose!

16. Parody Irony and Satire Satire: The use of humour, parody and irony, to highlight the shortcomings of people, societies and nations with the intent to ridicule them.
