Importance of extracting information from sources • Why should users learn how to extract information?: • It helps users not to search in the same database/collection more than once for the same thing • If information from sources is not extracted, it may get lost or forgotten • It helps in extracting relevant information from various sources accessed • It helps to provide bibliography and reference list

  3. Skimming • Skimming is quickly casting eyes over a piece of text to get the gist of it – and to discover if it is of interest or relevance. • Clues in the text to help in skimming: • Words in bold • Pictures • Bullet points • Quotes & shadow boxes

  4. Scanning • Scanning is when one looks at a piece of text to see if can spot a keyword or a heading to locate specific information • It also involves reading table of contents, abstracts, introduction and conclusion of the text. • It helps to avoid reading text from beginning to the end

Ways of extracting information from sources • Taking notes by pen and pencil • Copy and paste on a word-processing program (such as Microsoft word) • Making photocopy of printed material • Making print copies of digital materials • Highlighting • Downloading • Making digital copies of digital materials • Audio/video recording Plagiarism
