  2. What is Salubong? • The re-enactment of reunion of the Risen Christ with the Virgin Mary • It is led by the town’s Cathedral • The witnessing the resurrection of Christ by his mother and his disciples

  3. Origin of Salubong • St. Ignatius noticed that the Sacred Scriptures never mentioned Jesus appearing to his grieving mother after his resurrection • Out of this insight, came the popular devotion in the Philippines of the Salubong, depicted, by the way, of the Filipinos’ representation of Easter

  4. When and how do we celebrate it? • Sabado de Gloria/Easter Sunday • Starts at dawn just before sunrise, with two processions (starts at different points) • 1st procession: The icon of the risen Christ carried by men • 2nd procession: The Blessed Virgin Mary (covered with a black veil to denote her mourning) carried by women

  5. When and how do we celebrate it? • Along the way, people pray the rosary with lighted candles • The ceremony of the meeting begins with the choir singing alleluias as Mary approaches Jesus • Under a canopy, an angel descends on top of the head of Mary and lifts the black veil from her, exposing a happy mother who is seeing her son.

  6. When and how do we celebrate it? • Confetti is thrown and choirs would hail the Risen Christ and sing songs of joy At the end of the Dawn mass, various activities, like a fiesta begins, to celebrate the victory of our resurrection

  7. What is its significance? • It signifies how powerful God is for he sacrificed his son and brought Christ back to life again to save us from all of our sins.

Songs used in Salubong • Salubong Rites: • Ito AngBagongArawparasasayawngmgaanghel • Regina Coeli (Gregorian Chant) / Reyna ngLangit (old version) • Entrance: Si Kristo ay MulingNabuhay (PambungadnaAwit) ni Fr.
