  1. 10th Grade Academy ProjectMission: Mars! 4/18/13

  2. Mission Briefing… You have been selected for a top secret mission to Mars. You will be designing your own website detailing various aspects of your mission. You will submit your weebly link to all of the 10th grade teachers you have. Final Weebly page due: Monday, May 20

  3. General Information • You will be completing all aspects of the project no matter how many 10th grade classes you have. • The only exception is if you do not have Geometry, you do not need to complete the geometry part. • Your final project will be a website using Weebly. • We will be giving you your login information and having a live class to explain Weebly the week after testing (4/29-5/2).

  4. 10th Grade Teachers If you have questions about the project, contact the teachers you have for class. If you are working on an aspect of the project for which you do not have a 10th grade teacher (Bio, Geometry, English, US History), contact that teacher from the academy you are in. Academy 1 Academy 2 • Biology/Geometry • Ms. Eberwine • ms.eberwine@gmail.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1012 • English • Mr. Horton • mr.horton.english@gmail.com • Google Voice #: 330-556-0410 • 1-800-493-8580 ext. 1091 • US History • Mr. Lamielle • mr.lamielle@gmail.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1025 • Biology • Mr. Dawson • ronald.dawson@ohdela.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1180 • English • Mrs. Cales • melinda.cales@ohdela.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1196 • Geometry • Mrs. Michels • tara.michels@ohdela.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1077 • US History • Ms. Cohen • Ashley.cohen@ohdela.com • 1-800-493-8680 ext. 1036

  5. Geometry • You will design multi-purpose greenhouse to live on Mars. • The greenhouse needs to include at least one prism, one cylinder, one sphere somewhere in the design. • You will then decide what 5 things they will need to bring with them (food, water, clothing, supplies, etc) from Earth and design storage containers to hold those items.

  6. Biology • You will be creating a website to describe a greenhouse habitat on Mars.

  7. Biology • You will need to provide essentials for your colony on Mars with limited resources • You must determine what living things and materials to bring from Earth to create a sustainable greenhouse • The greenhouse must be able to perform its functions and remain stable without any further materials from Earth

  8. Biology Factors to consider in your sustainable greenhouse: • Air quality • Water availability • Food • Temperature • Waste products • Medical needs • Energy needs

  9. US History • Geography: • Explain the physical geography inside of your green house. (Examples: animals, water, air, land, population, urban, rural, climate, vegetation, settlement, environment, industry) • How does the geography affect the type of industries that will exist in your green house? • What are the environmental challenges?

  10. US History • Industrialization: • Based on natural resources available, geography, man-power, technology, and machinery, what types of industry will your habitat have? (Keep in mind that you are traveling to space and can only bring so much at time with you to Mars.) • Consider the impact your industries have on the environment. How will the pollution produced (if any) impact the surrounding environment? What challenges arise as a result of pollution, and how will you meet them?

  11. US History • Economy: • What will your industries produce in your habitat to sustain life? • How will your industries produce these products? • For whom are your industries producing for? (Your habitat only? Exporting to Earth?) • Who makes the economic decisions in your habitat? (Centrally-planned? Market-based?)

  12. English • For all of the parts above, you will need to do research. • We will be assessing you on your research and citation abilities. • Requirements: • Works Cited Page with at least 6 sources. • Located somewhere on weebly page. • At least 6 in-text citations in your writing on weebly page. • Your writing should be clear and concise with obvious editing and proofreading. • Academic/Formal Tone.

  13. English Scales Research Writing

  14. English Scales Writing Continue

  15. General Information • You should begin working on the research and other parts of creating your project outside of weebly. Anything you create in word documents or on paper, you can then put into weebly when you have your account information. • There will be some formative assessments and Weebly checks before the final project is due. • We will be teaching classes on Weebly as well as refresher courses on research and citations in the English classes during the week of 4/29-5/2 (after OAAs). • All students are welcome to attend live and archives to these classes will be provided for all students, even if they do not have a 10th grade English course. • Continue to check the lessons each week in each of your classes for the schedule of live classes and formative assessments.

  16. Reminder • You should still attend the rest of your live classes today (including Biology and US History.)

  17. Announcements • Mr. Horton’s English II • I am out of the office all of next week (April 22-April 26) for the OAAs! • During this time best way to reach me is using my google voice number (330-556-0410) for calls, texts or voicemails, my outside email (mr.horton.english@gmail.com), or the pinpoint email. I will be checking my email at least once or twice a day. I will NOT be able to get to my work phone calls or voicemails until I return. • You should be working on your Catcher in the Rye Summative Essay and begin working on the Mission: Mars project all of next week. • Your lessons will be posted with more information. • Check the course announcements and lessons for updates on when I will return to the office and when our next live classes will be. • Ms. Eberwine’s Geometry and Biology • Still have live class on Monday (April 22). • Out of the office Tuesday-Thursday for OAAs. • Mr. Lamielle’s US History • Still have live class on Monday (Aprill 22).

  18. Questions, Comments, Smart-Remarks?! If you have any questions, raise your hand and wait for one of the teachers to call on you. If not, you are free to go. Have a great week and good luck on the project!
