  16. workforce Malmö has a flourishing commercial life with strong growth and belief in the future. In the 1990s, the city went through a tough period in which several industries closed down and the active workforce shrank. During this period, decisions were made including the foundation of Malmö University (established in 1998) and the construction of the Öresund Bridge (inaugurated in 2000). Two initiatives among many that have contributed to Malmö’s development from an industrial town into a knowledge city.
