  3. Purpose • To present the affirmative side of thesis statement: • The Chief States School Officers have overstepped their authority in developing and recommending the Common Core State Standards for U.S. Public Schools

  4. What are Common Core State Standards? • CCSS are a shared set of educational standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics • The idea behind CCSS is for students across the U.S. to receive a similar education with benchmarks that match international standards to aid our students in today’s globally competitive job market • The Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors Association co-lead CCSS planning and development www.teachingchannel.org

Who are the Chief States School Officers? • The Council of Chief States School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization • The CCSSO is comprised of state commissioner of education • In Washington, this is Randy Dorn, Superintendent of Public Instruction • Chris Minnich, executive director of CCSSO, is the main officers behind the development and push of the Common Core State Standards www.ccsso.org

Special Interests in Education • The CCSSO claims to be a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, yet there website clearly outlines business and industry partnerships, such as: • Data Recognition Corporation • ETS • McGraw-Hill Education • Microsoft • Pearson Education • Corwin Press • Apple • These businesses have special interests in education through assessment, equipment, software, professional development, curriculum and publishing. www.ccsso.org

  8. National Mandates at Community Level • Our founding fathers felt public schooling to be an essential part of our democracy. Such schooling was meant to be left in the hands of the local community to teach state-mandated skills • Fraser, 2010 • Common Core State Standards disregard regional differences, giving control of education decision-making to federal government • Luebke, 2013

  9. Cost • Introducing new standards often means new textbooks, technology, testing, and training for teachers • California recently spent $1 billion on implementing CCSS • Estimated nationwide implementation of CCSS is $15.8 billion

Outlined Standards are too Long and Detailed • Math standards in Finland for elementary and middle-schoolersare 9 pages, CCSS are 70+ pages • “It leaves little time for teachers to realistically prepare thoughtful curriculum or accommodate for developmental differences. Instead it promotes a highly prescribed training of children.” • Former deputy secretary for the Education Department, Diane Ravitch
