ASGCLA’s Mission Enhancing the effectiveness of library service by advocating for and providing high quality networking, enrichment, and educational opportunities for its diverse members, who represent state library agencies, federal libraries, armed forces libraries, specialized libraries, library cooperatives and networks, library consultants, and others.
ASGCLA’s Vision “The premier destination for ALA members to find information about and build capacity to serve [our populations].” Advocacy Information Policy Professional Leadership & Development Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
ASGCLA’S History In 1977, two ALA Divisions merged to form ASCLA: • The American Association of State Library Agencies (founded 1957) • The Health and Rehabilitative Library Services Division (founded 1956 as the Assoc. of Hospital and Institution Libraries) The Independent Librarians Exchange Round Table (ILERT) merged with ASCLA in 1998. The Federal and Armed Forces Libraries Round Table (FAFLRT) merged to form ASGCLA in 2018.
A Home for Many ASGCLA is the most multifaceted division of ALA and the premier national association for: • State libraries and state library staff • Federal and armed forces libraries and librarians • Library cooperatives and staff • Library consultants and independentlibrarians • Libraries and library staff serving specialized populations, including people with disabilities and people who are incarcerated or detained
Who We Are…1 State library agencies, including state library staff and consultants – organizations created or authorized by the state government to promote library services in the state.
Who We Are…2 Federal and Armed Forces Libraries – libraries and their staff serving federal agencies, including regional offices, research facilities, and military base libraries.
Who We Are…3 Library networks and cooperatives and their staff – organizations of one or more types of libraries (academic, public, special, or school) to collaborate to maximize funds available for provision of library services to all people.
Who We Are…4 Consultants, independent or contract librarians, as well as those who work outside of traditional library settings.
Who We Are…5 Librarians, library agencies, and staff serving people with disabilities such as those with sensory, physical, health, or behavioral conditions.
