  1. What is Transpiration? • Transpiration is the process by which the plant cools itself by releasing water from openings in its leaves called stomata.

  2. Stomata • Stomata are openings on the bottom side of plants’ leaves which release water to cool the leaves when needed. • They are opened and closed by guard cells.

  3. When Do the Stomata Open? • The stomata open only when the air temperature is hot, during the daylight hours. • They do not open if the plant is water stressed.
