  5. BL 5.4 M1 Mirror Design Review • M1 Mirror Description • The M1 Mirror assembly is a planar optic designed to intercept 69 mrad horizontal by 17 mrad vertical of the bend magnet radiation from a source at a distance of 0.818 m at a 45 degree angle of incidence. • The M1 Mirror optic cartridge consists of an internally cooled Glidcop optical surface/hot wall brazed to Glidcop substrate which is brazed to a stainless steel shaft/flange. • The M1 Mirror assembly uses a mechanism to insert and withdraw the M1 Mirror from the beam path. This mechanism consists of three pneumatic cylinders plumbed in parallel. It has two adjustable limit switches to indicate the position (in or out) of beam to the EPS system. There’s a kinematic system consisting of commercially available balls and rods along with guide rods to guide and return the mirror to a repeatable position when inserted in to beam path. • The M1 Mirror optic surface/hot wall is tapered away from face to “shadow” braze joint so that it sees no heat load. • The M1 Mirror assembly has adjustable features that allow for depth and angular adjustment with respect to storage ring chamber. 7. BL 5.4 M1 FEA Results, full heat load, 4th Design Max temp: ~225 C Max stress: ~203 MPa

  8. BL 5.4 M1 FEA Results, 4th Design • AL-15 GlidCop: “safe” temp to avoid creep <300C, yield stress ~400 MPa • Flux density: ~80 W/mm2, Total power: ~1.9 kW • Cooling parameters: water, 3 GPM total flow rate (0.25 per channel) • Film coefficient 14,837 W/m^2*K, typical value in many BL optics • At full heat load, max temp: ~225 C, max stress: ~203 MPa • Mirror should survive for both temp, stress.
