  4. Course Description In this course, the student will develop an understanding of the work of the historical, wisdom, and poetic writers in their ministry to make the Lord known and glorify Him. The student will also be exposed to some of the critical issues concerning the Scriptures covered in this course. The course covers the historical, wisdom, and poetic writers from Joshua through Song of Songs.

  5. Course Objectives • Gain extensive Biblical literacy through reading and attending lectures • Get exposed to other important primary and secondary historical sources that are used as evidence for historical events and Biblical corroboration • Apply techniques from BH101 (Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application) on select passages in class • Gain a good understanding of the flow of history from Adam to post-Exile Judah • Be equipped, encouraged, and edified to aid in your spiritual growth and personal ministries to others

  10. Grading Expectation • We are more interested in your spiritual growth than the grade which you will receive. • The grades are intended as a gauge for our instructors of both your areas of mastery or areas that are in need of growth. • You will be objectively graded • If circumstances do not allow you to perform at the level that you might otherwise desire, then please understand that it is acceptable to take a lower grade in order to fulfill your personal responsibilities to the Lord outside of class.

  11. Course Policies • Late work – get it done on time; special circumstances will be taken into consideration • Attendance – you need to be as a top priority, but work and travel happen • Electronics • Take notes on it, don’t surf the web and play games • Take cell phone calls outside the class • Sleepy? Stand up in the back, get a donut or coffee • Potty? Go gogo. • Hungry? Eat and drink at your leisure • Selfie? Really?

  12. Session 1 Background: Pre-flood

  13. Background • Joshua begins in c. 1406 B.C. • We must first understand the past before we can understand Joshua • From creation to the death of Moses: Theoretically and with Approximations • Warning do not be overly dogmatic with uncertainty

  14. Creation and the Bible Recall BH101 (Fall 2017) Observations from Genesis 1 • God was already at the beginning • When was the beginning? • What was before the beginning? • The heavens and the earth were created at the beginning • The earth was “formless and void” yet there was a surface covered in water • The earth was already there on “one day” • The light was called “day” (lasting 12 hours as separated) • Animals, man, and woman were all created on the sixth “day”

  15. Creation and the Bible • Day in Genesis 2:4 • One day encompassed all of the creation acts of God on the earth • Day in Psalm 90:4 and II Peter 3:8 • Creation in Job 38:1-7 • No man knows; Job didn’t know and neither do we nor anyone else • The earliest Church Fathers understood God with respect to time better than we do today • Read • In the Beginning we Misunderstood by former CBC pastor Johnny Miller and John Soden • Anything by Astrophysicist Hugh Ross

  16. Creation and the Bible • God can make things with age, and God is also outside of time and space, so age doesn’t matter • Consider water into wine • We do not know all the variables • It is un-Biblical to pick either a young or old earth • Or perhaps you can answer where you were when God made the heavens and the earth and give your eyewitness testimony?

  17. Creation and Science • The Big Bang Theory • The singularity • Time and space began when it expanded • Claim: There was no time or space before the singularity expanded • Something preceded it outside of time • It is still growing into something outside of space • Big Bang and Newton’s First Law of motion • Something had to act upon the singularity in order for it to expand • Science is agnostic as to the cause of the Big Bang

  18. God and the Law of Cause and Effect • The Law of Cause and Effect: Every effect must have a cause, and every cause will have an effect. • Not “every thing must have a cause” • God did not make Himself • God is not an effect • God is an uncaused “Cause” not an uncaused effect

  19. The Beginning and Beyond • Calendars • Anno Mundi (A.M.) = Year of the World • Adam’s creation = 1 A.M. • B.C. Date unknown • Imago Dei by Observation • Rule over the earth • Subdue the earth • God’s representative on earth • The Garden of Eden as sacred • Work in the Garden as good

  20. Adamic Covenant • Be fruitful and multiply • Fill the earth • Subdue the earth • Rule over all that moves on the earth • Eat vegetables only • Eat from any tree, but not from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or you will die in that day

  21. The Woman • Adam had to name all the animals then he noticed that he was without a corresponding mate • God made a corresponding helper • His weaknesses are her strengths and vice versa • God made a woman from his rib (side) • Marriage defined in the Bible: Genesis 2:24 • One man and one woman; not one man and 2+ women and nothing else outside of that either • Many will transgress God’s definition of marriage in the Bible, it is never ok

  22. The Order God and His Word Man and Woman Animals and Plants

  23. The Fall • Satan is the serpent of old (Rev 12:9; 20:2) • Satan twisted God’s Word to tempt and deceive Eve • The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil • The pattern from temptation to sin • Saw it was good for food (physical) • Saw it was good to look at (observable) • Saw it was good to make wise (ideological) • Adam was with her and saying nothing • Passivity of men

  24. The Order Reversed Satan and his lies Animals (Snake) and Food (Tree of Life) Man and Woman God and His Word

  25. The Curse • Satan • Enmity between his seed and Eve’s seed • Eve’s seed will crush his head, but he will strike the heel of Eve’s seed (realized in Jesus) • Eve • Labor pain and otherwise pain in bringing children into the world • Desire for husband – to dominate or to be dominated by • Husband will rule over her (contrast with the complimentary approach before)

  26. The Curse • Adam • Cursed ground of the earth • Bad things will come from it now • Hard labor • Death: from dust to dust • God covers them with animal skins • The first sacrifice: the animals paid for their sin • Adam names her after the curse as he had named the animals • Concept: You own what you name • Banishment from the Garden of Eden

  27. The Aftermath (Gen 4-5) • Adam and Eve have children • Sons and daughters • Cain kills Abel • Cain is married to his sister, they live separated from Adam and Eve in the land of Nod east of Eden • The line of Cain continues in sin • Seth is born when Adam is 130 years old (A.M. 130) • The line of Seth calls on the name of the Lord and pursues righteousness • The line of Seth eventually falls into sin • Adam dies at the age of 930 (dying within the “one day” of a thousand years) • Genesis 5 pattern – they all die except Enoch

  28. Noah and the Flood (Gen 6-9) • The sons of God are angels that came down and had children with women • This view is held by Josephus, Philo, and the earliest Church Fathers • Other people believe it was the evil line of Cain marrying the daughters of Seth and corrupting the line of Seth • Their offspring were the fodder for stories of the Titans and heroes of old • Common stories passed since the flood to all peoples • The apocryphal book of Enoch speculates about it • Written as a moral allegory, by a non-prophet using the name of Enoch, in the intertestamental period

  29. Noah and the Flood (Gen 6-9) • 10th generation from Adam • So long as this list is a complete genealogy and not just the highlights • Ages of the ancients: other histories give incredibly long lives to the pre-flood ancients • Noah was the last of the righteous • The flood was a judgment on the continual violence and evil in that corrupt world • We have no idea what the pre-flood globe looked like as water came up from below and above • Did any structures survive the flood?

  30. Noah and the Flood (Gen 6-9) • Similar stories on all habitable continents • Anger of the gods at mankind; they order a flood to kill them all • Righteous man and his friends and family saved • Animals saved • Birds sent out to check for land • Sacrifices offered to the gods • Rainbow as a sign of no more global flood • Tension: Similarities between global flood all over the earth vs. the anthropological views today

  31. Noah and the Flood (Gen 6-9) • The Noahic Covenant • Be fruitful and multiply • Fill the earth • Rule over the earth • You can eat meat, but not the blood • Capital Punishment • No more global flood • Rainbow is the sign of the Noahic Covenant • The curse of Canaan (not Ham)

  37. The Tower of Babel (Gen. 10-11) • The sin of Babel • Rebellion against God’s Word and rule • Fill the earth • War against God (fast forward to Revelation 19) • The outcome of Babel • Languages • Never ending war – movement of the people over the whole face of the earth • Heroes, Immortals, and the gods • Nimrod’s new Empire • Spreads in Shinar (Sumer) then into Assyria (Asshur)

  44. Abraham • His nephew Lot is the father of the Ammonites and Moabites • He marries Hagar and has 2 wives… • Hagar’s son Ishmael is the father of the Arabs • Abraham took part in a terrible war from the Empire that Nimrod set up • This war sets up the struggle for power between Assyria, Babylon, and Persia
