  1. “ The Bike ” … & How Sentences Work

  2. * Sentences * Which of the following do you think are sentences? • Roman gods had many amazing powers. • The school will open an outdoor ice skating rink in November. • He smiles.

  3. Sentences have TWO parts. ALL THREE! • Length does notdetermine a sentence. • No matter how long or short a group of words is, it needs two parts to be a sentence: A Subject … & a Predicate

  4. The Subject: • Tells us WHO or WHAT … The Predicate: • Tells us something about that • sentence topic.

  5. CONNECT These two parts… The subject and predicate connect to form a basic sentence, also known as an “independent clause.” SubjectPredicate Who or what? What about it? He … smiles. Roman Gods … had many amazing powers. The park district … will open an outdoor ice skating rink in November.

  6. Another way to describe a sentence is to compare it to a bike… The subject is one ; and the Predicate is the other . wheel wheel These two parts connect to form a stable structure.

  7. A Sentence needs two wheels to make it move: Children play. Classmates studied.

  8. You only need two wheels …. But most of the time our ideas include more details. So, we add extra words to the wheels. The neighborhoodchildren playbasketball at the community center. Our classmates in the biology labstudiedcells under an electron microscope.

  9. You always need two wheels …. No matter how much detail we add, the wheels give the same kind of information. The subject tells us who or what. The predicate tells us what about it. SubjectPredicate Who or what? What about it? Caesar conquered many lands. People everywhere love good stories with heroes and villains. The Roman world influences our own world in infinite ways.

  10. REVIEW …. A Sentence needs two complete parts, two wheels to make its idea move. Front wheel Everyone in this myth … Front wheel back wheel Everyone in this myth has a fantastic adventure.

  11. REVIEW …. Here’s another example: Front wheel Jupiter, king of the gods, Front wheel back wheel Jupiter, king of the gods, ruled all of creation with his thunderbolt.

  12. REVIEW …. The Subject and Predicate can be short: The baby sleeps. BUT, to communicate more information and a more important point, we add more DETAILS: The four-month old baby, is now able to sleep through most of the night.

  13. REVIEW …. The Subject tells us whoor what. The Predicate tells us something about that topic. Who or whatWhat about it Somebody has sent us flowers. The children’s dreams have finally come true. Roman gladiators were the Empire’s biggest celebrities. Your comic character should be interesting and magnetic.
