Scurvy. It affects more than pirates!. Definition. Scurvy is a state of dietary deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Can cause bleeding of the gums and bleeding into all epithelial tissue. (see next slide, bleeding INTO skin). Cause. A dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid. Cure.

  4. Cure • Consumption or absorption of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

  5. Statistics and Facts • Relatively rare disease • 57 people died from scurvy from 1979-2005 in the United States • Generally a problem where malnutrition exists • International Rates of Scurvy are unknown, but are thought to be higher in Desert regions where ascorbic acid is rarer.
