  3. Many Research and Monitoring Programs Produce Data on The Environment • Federal, state and local governments • Corporations and non-profits • Academic research organizations

  4. A Vision of a National System of Indicators on Natural Resources and the Environment • A comprehensive set of indicators and statistics on the environment and natural resources • High quality data and statistical methods • Substantially greater consistency over time and across scales and institutions • Up-to-date information technology to compile and provide access to data and indicators • Specialized and widely trusted institutions to compile, publish and improve indicators

  5. Collaboration to Bridge the Chasm • New institutions and institutional arrangements are needed to draw from these many elements. • A collaborative process involving Federal and non-Federal partners and a wide range of participants is being planned.
