  3. Economy and Enterprise • Bank of Nova Scotia organised by Scots in 1832. • TOM DEVINE says: ‘Scots made up one third of the ruling elite but only 16 per cent of the population. Individual Scots dominated the fur trade, banking, business, politics and education.’

  4. Famous Scots Sir Alexander MacDonald • Born in Glasgow and migrated to Canada. • Premier of Canada West (Head of Government.) • Went on to become Canada’s first Prime Minister in 1867 • Founded the Canadian Mounted Police.

  5. Famous Scots William Lyon MacKenzie • Famous for leading a rebellion against the provisional Canadian Government. • Head of Canadian Radicalism. George Brown Became a business leader who founded the newspaper the ‘Toronto Globe’.

  6. Famous Scots Grace Annie Lockhart • First woman anywhere in the Empire to graduate from university in 1875.

  7. Culture and religion • The map of Canada is peppered with Scottish names. • For example, Airdrie, Stirling, Iona, Loch Lomand. • In some areas of Ontario, Gaelic is spoken.

  8. Culture and religion • Instrumental in creating schools and unviversites in Canada. • For instance, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario which was founded by George Murno Grant.

Native societies • Many Scots moved west and interacted with the Natives. • Some married into the tribes. • Some took land from the tribes and made it their own. • Scots involved in the slaughters of buffalo. • Tribes were left starving and weakened by epidemics that usually came from immigrants.

  10. TASK • Write a newspaper report on Scots emigrating to Canada. Get in as much detail as you can. • Homework on a how far/how fully question WILL BE GIVEN OUT TODAY FOR MONDAY! DO IT!
