Buddhism in Odisha (earlier known as KALINGA) • Buddhism in Odisha dated back to the era of Gautam Buddha • As per Buddhist text Anguttara Nikaya, Lord Buddha’s first disciples, Tapusa and Bhallika, were the honey traders from Ukkala (Odisha ) who were given eight handfuls of hair by Lord Buddha during the seventh week after his enlignment at Bodhgaya. • KALINGA war which took place in Orissa made Emperor Ashoka to renounce violence and seek the refuge of Lord Buddha . Chandasoka became Dhammasoka and Buddhism became world religion under the patronage of Ashoka. • Puspagiri University the prominent seat of Buddhist learning which flourished until the11th century was the last refuge of Buddhism in India. • Famous chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang visited Odisha in 639 CE who found Buddhism in a very flourishing condition with more than hundred monasteries humming with the activities of myraids of monks which he elaborately mentioned in his travelogue. • Lord Buddha’s relic was excavated at Lalitgiri Monastery and is currently under the custody of ASI in Odisha State Museum.

Major attractions: PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY Seat of Higher Learning of Buddhism in Ancient India (2nd century BC-10th century AD) • University Campus was spread across 3 adjoing hills-Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri • Structures excavated was older and larger than contemporary Buddhist centre of Learning such as Nalanda and Vikramashila.

  5. RATNAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) The finest relic of Buddhist art at Ratnagiri is a magnificent doorjamb adorning Monastery 1, one of the two monasteries here. Ratnagiri comprises two magnificent monasteries, one of them was double storied and had an extensive stone paved central courtyard with two-sides of it having a number of cells for habitation of monks. Monastery at Ratnagiri or the “hill of jewels” situated atop the flat hillock was established in the first half of the sixth century CE, and flourished until the twelfth century CE.

  6. RATNAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) Sanctum Sanctorium : The sanctum enshrines a massive seated Buddha in bhumisparsa-mudra flanked by the standing figures of Padmapani and Vajrapani holding chamaras on each side.

  7. RATNAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) The largest stupa was 14 m square and 5.2 m high surrounded by four minor stupas.

  9. UDAYAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) Udayagiri or the “Sun rise Hill”, the most picturesque among the three is situated on the slope of a crescent shaped low hill. Located at the base of verdant rolling hills forming a semi circle, this site exemplifies the blissful and tranquil natural surroundings selected for the construction of Buddhist monasteries in ancient India. This site, a Mahayana-Vajrayana site whose name has been ascertained from terracotta sealings as Madhavapura Mahavihara Arya Viksu Sangha, was a vibrant center of Buddhist learning and worship between 8th to 13th centuries AD.

UDAYAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) The Mahastupa of a total height of 7m from the ground and 4.8m from pradakshinapatha has niches in each cardinal direction which enshrines seated images of Dhyan Buddhas-Akshobhya (E), Amitabha (W), Amoghasiddhi (N) and Ratnasambhava (S); all inscribed with Buddhist creeds.

  11. UDAYAGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) Udayagiri have brought into light the remains of a huge monastic complex comprising a Mahastupa and an east facing square monastery. The monastery is square in plan (35x35m) and has a shrine chamber with an ornate gateway housing a colossal image of Buddha in bhumisparsamudra

  12. LALITGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) Lalitgiri, locally known as Naltigiri is couched between Parabhadi and Landa hills of the isolated Assia range. Iconographic analysis indicates thatLalitgirihad already been established during the Sunga period of the 2nd century BC, making it one of the oldest Buddhist establishment in the world. 

  13. LALITGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) The excavations revealed the remains of a massive stupa on hilltop with two reliquaries made of khondalite stone. Within one of these caskets was found a steatite container with a silver casket enclosing a gold casket which contained the relic or dhatu in the form of a small fragment of bone. The hilltop Mahastupa at Lalitgiri is 15 meter in diameter, and is constructed in Sanchi style which is visible from afar.

  14. LALITGIRI MONASTERY (PUSHPAGIRI UNIVERSITY) Another important discovery at the site is the structural remains of an east facing large brick built apsidal chaityagriha (33x11m) with a circular stupa in the centre of the apsidal end of the chaityagraha

KALINGA WAR MEMORIAL (SHANTI STUPA): Shanti Stupa (or Peace Pagoda) at the Dhauligiri hills in Bhubaneswar, India.It was here at Dhauligiri that emperor Ashok laid down the weapons of violence and accepted a life of Ahimsa in the form of Buddhism after the Kalinga war. This Buddhist structure at Dhauligiri was built jointly in 1972 by the Japan Buddha Sangh and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangh.
