  1. What Is Alzheimer's Disease? Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia, a neurological disorder that affects the brain. It is a progressive disease, meaning that it gets worse over time. The cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, though it’s believed to be related to a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The most common symptom of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, which can start with difficulty recalling recent events or people's names. As the disease progresses, other areas of cognitive functioning such as language and problem-solving skills become affected as well. Behavioural changes are also common, such as agitation or depression. Eventually individuals with Alzheimer’s can no longer perform daily activities on their own and require constant care and support from others. Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment typically focuses on relieving symptoms and slowing down its progression with medications like cholinesterase inhibitors or memantine hydrochloride. These medications may help slow memory loss in some patients and improve quality of life. There are also strategies that can be employed to help reduce behavioral issues like wandering or aggression and promote meaningful interactions with family members and caregivers.

  2. Taking proactive steps to maintain cognitive health has been found to lower one’s risk for developing Alzheimer’s in the first place, such as eating a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits, getting plenty of exercise and sleep, socialising regularly with friends and family members, learning new things through classes or activities, staying engaged in hobbies one enjoys, etc.. Taking care of one’s mental health is equally important—participating in stress management practices such as yoga or mindfulness meditation can help reduce levels of cortisol (a hormone associated with higher risk for dementia). Though it can feel overwhelming to face this difficult condition head on, having knowledge about Alzheimer's Disease may make you feel more empowered by being better informed about how to take care of yourself or someone else who may be dealing with the condition. With proper medical care combined with emotional support from family and friends living with this illness can become more manageable for everyone involved.
