  1. Energy efficiency in telecommunication access networks Sofie Lambert PhD Symposium - 6 December 2013

  2. Electricity consumption of communication networks is taking up an increasing share of global consumption More than 330 TWh in 2012 = production capacity of 38nuclear reactors

  3. Promising research directions to reduce power consumption in telecom networks Sleep modes Turn off devices or components when they are not used Example: switch off mobile base stations with overlapping coverage at night, when the network load is low Functionality consolidation Move functionality to a different location in the network, where it can be performed more efficiently Example: perform router functions at the operator’s central office instead of at the customer premises

  4. Recent research results Estimation of global electricity consumption in communication networks S. 5. PhD issues: three “ions” Organization From organizing the papers I’ve read, over organizing my workload to organizing my thoughts and ideas. Procrastination How to stay motivated when the goal is set months or even years from now? How to set your own short-term goals? Publication (pressure) This issue was recently raised in local media by an open letter and petition from “Actiegroep hoger onderwijs”. While publications should be a means to share ideas, now in some cases they are used to obtain funding (since funding distribution is partly based on the number of publications).
