  3. Historical Development of the Internet and the WWW • Internet = world wide system of millions of computers connected by communication networks • History : • In 1969, a project called APRANET • by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the US Department of Defense..

Aim : to provide communication network that would enable messages transmission even if the country was under military attack • Connected only 4 computers at various Universities in USA • connected by telephone lines • to create a network called ARPANET • have great benefits on • electronic mailing system • share information and notes

  5. In 1985, the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) • linking more supercomputers • NSFNET served as a high-speed communications backbone for the internet until 1995 • the World Wide Web (WWW, 3W) • invention : early 1990 • led to exponential growth of the internet • www <> internet
