  2. FOOD In the spring and summer the Indians raise crops of corn, beans, squash, pumpkins, and sunflower seed.

  3. Shelter The Southeast Indians lived in shelters called chickees and wigwams. Wigwams are made of green saplings covered in birch bark. A hole in the center of the roof allowed smoke to escape. Chickees were grasses and sticks. They had no walls.

  4. CLOTHING • The shoes they wore are called moccasins. • They used deer skin , breech cloth, and deer hide.

  5. Important Facts • Sequoyah was a Southeast Cherokee Indian who created the first written language. The Southeast Indians were forced off their land by President Andrew Jackson who signed the Indian Removal Act. These Indians had to walk hundreds of miles to reservations in Oklahoma. Over four thousand of them died in what is now known as the Trail of Tears.
