  2. MOTIVATION • Engine company operations make up a large portion of the daily tasks we face on a routine basis. Engine placement and a proper hand line deployment is the foundation for a successful operation.

  3. OBJECTIVE • The student will have an understanding of the riding positions associated with the engine company and how engine company operations are applied on the fire ground.

  4. OVERVIEW • Standard Company Function • Engine Company Riding Assignments • Fire Behavior • Hose line Selection • Offensive Attack • Defense Attack

  5. STANDARD COMPANYFUNCTIONS NON- FIRE • First Engine • Front of Building • Leave room for ladder company • Investigate • Second Engine • Staging Area • Announce Location • Select Hydrant

  6. First Engine Front of Building Leave room for the ladder company Size-up (RECEO VS) Rescue Exposure Confined Extinguish Overhaul Vent Salvage STANDARD COMPANYFUNCTIONS FIRE

  7. STANDARD COMPANYFUNCTIONS FIRE • First Engine (continued) • Rescue if needed • Water Supply: Don’t pass hydrant • Fire Attack: Appropriate hand line • Primary Function: Get & sustain water • Lives can be saved with proper placement

  8. STANDARD COMPANYFUNCTIONS FIRE • Second Engine • Support water supply • Assure first line functional/Operating • Back-up line: Same or larger

  9. STANDARD COMPANYFUNCTIONS FIRE • Third Engine • Division “C” • Direction of Incident Commander • Establish Water Supply • Report Conditions

  15. FIRE BEHAVIOR • Incipient Stage • Heat/smoke light • Approach close • Full flow not required • Directly apply stream on burning material

  16. FIRE BEHAVIOR • Free Burning • Greatly increased fire • Near Flashover or past 1300 degrees • Large volume of smoke • No water on smoke: Get to the base of fire • Look, listen, temperature change • Combination attack: “T” or “Z” pattern • Quick burst overhead until darkened • Lower angle onto contents

  17. FIRE BEHAVIOR • Smoldering Staging • Fire progressed through first two stages • Limited O2 supply • High heat/smoke • Heat may deny entry • Fire may make entry difficult/impossible • Reduce exposure of backdraft • Vent is needed high

  18. 1 3/4 Preconnect - Speed - Maneuverability - Mobility - 6 Lengths Max. - Residential - Strip Stores (When Appropriate) 2 1/2 Preconnect - 2 Companies - Commercial Watch Video- “ The 2 1/2 Line” HOSELINE SELECTION

  19. Advanced fire on arrival Defensive operations Unable to determine extent Large, uncompartmented areas Tons of water Standpipe system operations 2 1/2” HOSELINE SELECTION “ADULTS”

  20. HOSELINE SELECTION • How long a line? • Stretch Short • Get pinned down • Unable to advance • Fill-in with 2 1/2” or 3” to 1 3/4” high rise hose

  21. HOSELINE SELECTION • Over stretch • Kinks • Extra weight • Rule of thumb • Add length + depth of building • Add 50’ for each additional floor • Add distance from pump to building

  22. STRETCHINGTHE LINE • Nozzle position • Nozzle • First 50’ • Stretch dry if possible

  23. STRETCHINGTHE LINE • Control position • Get extra line near the building- flake out • Advance as needed • Do not push • Keep control of couplings • Get into the doorway • Keep “S” pattern with hose in hallway

  24. STRETCHINGTHE LINE • Chock doors where needed • Prevents hose hang-up • Line charged on closed door • Place chock above bottom hinge

  25. PLACEMENT OF LINE • Protect Life • Between victim/fire • Staircase • Confine fire • Extinguish fire • Advance from unburn side • Use the front door

  26. OFFENSIVE ATTACK • Gather Information • Prior to attacking • Trapped victims • Location of fire • What is burning • Exposures • Everyone must do a size-up

  27. OFFENSIVE ATTACK • First hose line • Watch downfalls • Occupied-- Fire/Occupants • Unoccupied-- Confine fire

  28. OFFENSIVE ATTACK • Constantly Move Forward • Stretch dry to safe area • Front door-- landing • Stairwell • Floor below • Door to basement- Do not descend dry • Future actions hinge on this task • Back-up line-- second engine

  29. TEAMWORK • Nozzle Position • Hit High • Sweep in front • Control Position • Makes nozzle position easier • Reassure nozzle • Keep line low • Nozzle moves left-- Control moves right • Never push nozzle man ahead

  30. TEAMWORK • Evaluate • Shut down • Look at effect of stream • Maintain Control • Observe conditions • Monitor advance • Be aware of members above fire (OV).

  31. TIPS TO NOZZLEMOVEMENT Straight stream on the beams Stay low, go slow No glow, no flow

  32. DEFENSIVE ATTACK • Interior Attack Not Possible • Fire gains control • Initial fire forces not enough • Exposures • Material Involved

  33. DEFENSIVE ATTACK • Offensive to Defensive • Interior Attack Fails • Building components failing • Control fire • Watch Video- “ Stretching The Initial Attack Handline”by The Late Great Andy Fredricks, FDNY

  34. REVIEW • Standard Company Function • Engine Company Riding Assignments • Fire Behavior • Hose line Selection • Offensive Attack • Defense Attack
